One of the major topics of discussion during Wednesday night’s Manhattan Ogden USD 383 school board meeting was the possibility of forming a separate seventh grade football program. A soldier at Ft. Riley was sentenced Wednesday for making false material statements to the Social Security Administration, U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom said. James Scott Nickerson, 38, Ft. Riley, Kan., was sentenced to six months in prison followed by six months home confinement and three years of supervised release. He also was ordered to pay $71,734 in restitution to the SSA and an additional $250 to the United States Treasury for a stimulus payment he was not entitled to receive. An October sixth sentencing date is set for a Junction City man who entered a no contest plea earlier this summer in a felony animal cruelty case. Michael Hall, 47,  is involved in a Geary County case of hanging a German Shepherd puppy until it died. Halls’s last sentencing date was September fifth, but it had to be continued as the defense did not arrange for a required psychological evaluation for the defendant. The Wamego City Commission took care of business Tuesday evening. City Manager Merl Page introduced an ordinance to issue temporary notes in the amount of $690,000 for the West Highway 24, Unit 3 project. He said because this is a Benefit District, the temporary notes allow them to pay bills as the project proceeds. Because of a provision, approval of this ordinance allows the City of Wamego to move forward because the issuance requires approval by the State Attorney General.
