The Sunset Zoo held their “Water Safari and Kids Free Day” on Saturday. Ella Casey, Marketing and Development Officer at Sunset Zoo, says the event had a great turnout. “It’s an annual special event we do every August to celebrate the last few weeks of summer and get out and splash around at the zoo,” Casey said. Casey observed kids enjoyed the day’s main attraction. “I think the biggest highlight of this event is Manhattan Fire Department has always partnered with us. They bring out one of their fire trucks and park it in the center of the zoo and…
Several local organizations provided food and resources to the poor at the “Everbody Counts” event on Saturday. Father Patrick Funston of Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church observed the event allowed the poor to connect to organizations that provide assistance. “It just takes a couple hours or one hour to go around to get on lists and to meet all of the people that you need to meet in order to get the resources you might need,” Funston said. Pastor Patrick McLaughlin of the First United Methodist Church said the event allowed the poor to provide their thoughts on how to improve…
On Saturday, the 5th inning was the Royals’ worst nightmare. On Sunday, it was nearly a dream come true. James Shields retired the first fifteen batters that he faced before giving up a solo home run to Josh Reddick, and the Royals sent eight batters to the plate in the top of the fifth, scoring four of them, and then coasted to a 4-2 win at O.o Coliseum in Oakland. Kansas City pounded out 14 hits in sending the A’s to their first series defeat since May. Something about that fifth inning; a Raul Ibanez homer on Friday was the…

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Westar Energy and Kansas City Power & Light want to charge customers for plant upgrades sooner than anticipated. The two companies share ownership of the coal-fired plant at La Cygne and presented the Kansas Corporation Commission Thursday the reasons they should approve a different approach to recovery costs. The companies normally couldn’t begin charging for the additional costs without filing a full rate case. But that process takes several months. The Topeka Capital-Journal reports Westar’s request would total about $3.5 million, which would cost the average residential customer about 16 cents per month. KCP&L hadn’t specified a…

Grossmont Community College offensive tackle A.J. Allen has informed KMAN that he is on his way to K-State early this week. K-State players are scheduled report Sunday for the start of fall camp. Allen won’t make it on Sunday, but he says he expects to be in Manhattan, “around Tuesday or Wednesday.” This is welcome news to the Wildcats who need help at offensive tackle after losing both Cornelius Lucas and Tavon Rooks to graduation. Fellow junior college offensive tackle Luke Hayes practiced in the spring, but ended up playing at guard in the spring game. All-Big 12 guard Cody…
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Jon Lester took the mound in a different uniform and, for the first time in his major league career, felt just slightly out of place. Quickly enough, he put aside the newness of pitching for Oakland — and the expectations that he’ll help lead baseball’s winningest team on a deep run in October. Lester worked into the seventh inning to win his Athletics debut and Gomes produced two timely hits during an eight-run burst in his Bay Area return for an 8-3 victory against the Kansas City Royals on Saturday. Two days after being traded from…
