A Manhattan woman was taken into custody by Riley County Police Wednesday morning on an arrest warrant for a variety of offenses.  Aline Appelhanz, 47, was arrested at her home by police serving an arrest warrant for the offenses of burglary, making false writing, and theft at the felony level.   At last report Appelhanz was still confined at the Riley County Jail on “no bond.”     ###   No one was hurt but Riley County Police filed a report for criminal discharge of a firearm in the city limits of Manhattan on Wednesday after a 28-year-old male subject stated that he…

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The last time Jason Vargas pitched against the Texas Rangers, it seemed like every runner that reached scoring position somehow managed to cross home plate. The exact opposite happened Wednesday night. Out with the old, in with the new.  A request was made by Director of Transportation, Doug Messer to purchase five new buses and dispose of five old buses, during Wednesday night’s Manhattan Ogden USD 383 school board meeting. Messer highlighted a new web site put together by the Kansas Department of Transportation that allows school districts to look into prices of buses from different companies, as well as view the features each bus has.  The department actually goes out and puts the buses to bids for the districts.  He said it has made the process much easier. (AP) Newly unsealed search warrants show federal regulators are investigating allegations that a Kansas chemical manufacturer illegally dumped fluids in a well in violation of safe drinking water laws. But the president of Sterling, Kansas-based Jacam Chemical Co. says it was treating a customer’s well and is cooperating with the investigation. Search warrants made public Wednesday in federal court show the Environmental Protection Agency has been conducting surveillance on Jacam and its subsidiary Jacam Manufacturing 2013 in Lyons since December 2012. Kansas State University is notifying 19 individuals who submitted applications for graduate programs in agronomy between 2010 and 2013 that some of their personal information may have been inadvertently exposed on the Internet. University information security staff was made aware of the issue on Aug. 22 and all files were immediately removed.   The data exposure was the result of an internal migration and not due to any hacking activity. KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) A woman accused of pretending to be pregnant to scam prospective adoptive parents in Kansas and elsewhere has notified the court she intends to change her plea. A court notation Tuesday shows 34-year-old Chrystal Marie Rippey, of Marshall, Texas, is scheduled for a change-of-plea hearing Sept. 17 before a federal magistrate judge in Kansas City, Kansas. Rippey was indicted in February on federal charges of mail and wire fraud. Defense attorney Thomas Bartee did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment.
