It’s the dog days of summer, and you could really tell on Sunday afternoon at CiCo Park.  Hundreds of dogs and their owners jumped into the pool to enjoy a little relief from the heat at the annual Pet Poolooza. Event organizer Angela Smith says it’s the 10th annual anniversary for the event, and donations taken at the entrance would go to the T. Russel Reitz Animal Shelter.  Several events and booths were available pool side.  A costume event, biggest and smallest dog, and even a dog and owner look-alike contest were in full swing. Over 150 kids participated in the HyVee Just Tri It Youth Triathlon in Manhattan City Park on Saturday morning.  Nearby streets were closed down during the race so that children could ride their bicycles on the roads safely. Children began the race by doing a 50-100 yard swim (depending on age).  Once completing the swimming portion, they ran to a “transition area” where they quickly got on their bikes and hit the open road.  After putting their bikes back, they ended the race by running through the park. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) New budget projections from the Kansas Legislature’s nonpartisan research staff show a state budget shortfall developing by July 2016. The projections released Friday by the Legislative Research Department also show a lower figure for the state’s cash reserves on June 30 than Gov. Sam Brownback’s administration reported last month. The department provided the figures to The Associated Press exclusively after releasing them to legislators. The department first said the state would face a $262 million shortfall by July 2016.
