With the proposed increased flood insurance rates, Riley County Commissioners hope to bring these concerning issues to state legislators in the fall. During Thursday’s county commission meeting, County Counselor, Clancy Holeman informed the commission he has been in contact with several of the legislators about the possibility of a flood insurance rate summit.  He said Mondays in September appear to be the best times, with the 22nd as the most promising date so far. A Manhattan student has been selected to participate in the Library of Congress Junior Fellows program. Congressman Tim Huelskamp of Kansas made that announcement today. Katherine Andrews of Manhattan is one of the 48 students selected. Andrews is a student at the University of Kansas and is one of 900 applicants chosen to be a part of the program this year.  She’ll be interning in the Preservation Research and Testing Division. Today, the Junior Fellows Summer Interns, along with Library curators and specialists, presented rare items from the Library s unique collection. ABILENE, Kan. (AP) Officials say a fire destroyed a theater housed in a historic church in Abilene. No injuries were reported after the fire Wednesday night the Great Plaines Theatre in downtown Abilene. Dickinson County Emergency Management Director Chancy Smith said the theatre was a total loss. He says no one was inside the building at the time of the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation. The building housing the theater was built in 1881 and served as the First Presbyterian Church for years and was later converted to a live theatre. It was the second historic…

Mike Moustakas scored the tie-breaking run when he jarred the ball out of the catcher’s glove in the ninth inning and the Royals beat the White Sox 2-1 Wednesday to take the three-game series. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran says a veterans medical center in Wichita left its laboratories unstaffed for entire shifts and sometimes resorted to “begging, borrowing and manipulation” just to obtain vital surgical equipment. Moran made the allegations in a letter sent last week to Sloan Gibson, the acting secretary of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affair. The Kansas Republican senator says the problems at the Robert J. Area officials are stressing the message that Fort Riley’s surrounding communities are dependent on the size of the Army post. As KMAN previously reported, the Riley County Police Department along with the Manhattan Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 831 Colorado Street in Manhattan on Monday. This fire damaged an unoccupied residence and was ultimately extinguished by 6 fire apparatus and 17 firefighters. The fire was ruled by fire investigators to have been set intentionally. On Wednesday, both agencies returned to Colorado Street in response to a fire at 823 Colorado Street.   Manhattan High School theater students are traveling to Edinburgh, Scotland for the upcoming Edinburgh Fringe Festival.  The festival is the largest arts and film festival in the world and has taken place every August in Edinburgh since 1947.     The MHS thespians will perform their 50 minute anti-bullying play “Barnyard” while at the festival. This play was written by Manhattan High alumnus Richard Broadhurst.     The theater group invites the public to see their final rehearsal performance before taking their talents across the Atlantic and into Europe.  The rehearsal will take place Friday, July 25 at 2pm in…
