In conjunction with Earth Day, which is Tuesday, Sunset Zoo held their annual event-“Party for the Planet”.  The celebration took place from noon-4:30 p.m. on Saturday and featured family-friendly activities that encouraged conservation and preservation of the natural world. A kid’s craft station and face painting was available in the Nature Exploration Center.  Guests of all ages enjoyed a beekeeping exhibit, local amphibians, and butterfly-friendly gardening. Zoo staff members highlighted animal enrichment activities to educate families and community members. After two years of renovations, the new Wonder Workshop Children’s Museum facility is open to the public.  The old building was located on Poyntz Avenue, and the new location is at 506 South Fourth Street. An open house took place Saturday from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. to commemorate the new building.  Admission was free and children roamed the one story house to look at the differently themed rooms. One room was dedicated to science, and had a static electricity machine for children to enjoy.  Other activities included face painting, legos, and drawing. HILLSBORO, Kan. (AP) A former six-term Kansas House member who was appointed in December to the state’s Supreme Court Nominating Commission has died in an ultralight plane crash near his hometown. The Kansas Highway Patrol reports 69-year-old Donald Dahl was flying at low altitude at 1:45 p.m. yesterday when he ran into a tree branch 2 miles south of Hillsboro. The retired U.S. Navy officer served in the House as a Republican from 1997 through 2008, including the last two years as speaker pro tem.

K-State won it’s first Big 12 series of the season in thrilling fashion 6-4 over Baylor on Friday night at Tointon Family Stadium. Blair DeBord’s infield single in the bottom of the eighth scored the two go-ahead runs to break a 4-4 tie and push the Wildcats ahead one final time in a back-and-forth game.
