SALINA, Kan. (AP) Salina police are investigating the theft of more than $1,000 in jet fuel from a fuel business. Police Lt. Scott Siemsen says 144 gallons of fuel were stolen from two trucks at Flower Aviation between June 20 and Aug. 14. The Salina Journal reported the business reported the theft Friday. Siemsen says the fuel costs $7 a gallon; leaving a loss of $1,008.
EMPORIA, Kan. (AP) Bestselling author James Patterson has given $48,000 to pay for scholarships for Emporia State University teaching students. Patterson has funded similar scholarships at several other universities, including Vanderbilt. Patterson said in a news release that his passion is to “get more and more kids excited about reading” and that training teachers is “essential to that mission.” Patterson’s books include the Alex Cross and Woman’s Murder Club series for adults and Maximum Ride, Witch Wizard and Middle School series for young adults. SALINA, Kan. (AP) A presentation on the recently excavated Kanza Indian village near Wichita is planned this week. Tricia Waggoner, the Kansas State Historical Society’s highway archaeologist, will discuss the history of the Fool Chief’s Village from 1830 to 1844. The site near Topeka had to be excavated because of a pending road project. The Wichita Eagle reports the free talk begins at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Smoky Hill Museum in Salina. The Riley County Police Department had its fifth of a series of six DUI Saturation Patrols on the evening of August 31, 2013 into the early morning hours of September 1, 2013. Five officers from the Riley County Police Department were assigned to the Saturation Patrol. Officers working the Saturation Patrol stopped thirty-four (34) motorists. Of these, six (6) were evaluated for DUI. Additionally, thirty-five (35) warning citations issued.
A man convicted in connection with a 1992 Geary county indecent liberties with a child case is up for a public comment session and possible parole. Darryl Manco, 49, was sentenced in September of 1992, after the March 1992 incident. He has been in jail since that time at a variety of facilities, although most recently is in maximum security at Lansing. His earliest possible rlease date is December first of this year.
