Senate Bill 298 was passed through the Senate on Wednesday.  The proposed legislation would eliminate the mortgage registration fee.  Riley County Commissioners, as well as Register of Deeds, Debbie Regester, have strongly been opposing the bill. Regester mentioned the confusion the bill could cause if it is passed, during Thursday’s Riley County Commission meeting.  She said she will expect that her department will have to reject more documents then they will actually record if the bill goes through. U-S Senator Jerry Moran of Manhattan is a Rotarian–and he was proud to address what is now his hometown group at lunch Thursday.   Moran talked about the importance of getting construction going on the National Bio and Agri-Defense Facility.  The Senator also addressed other issues of importance to his fairly new hometown, including Fort Riley, funding for the Manhattan Regional Airport renovation, and floodplain concerns.    The Manhattan Regional Airport is a priorty for  Moran, who visited with fellow Manhattan Rotarians Thursday noon. After law enforcement responded to a vehicle accident Wednesday evening in Duluth, the driver was found dead at the scene. The Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call about a roll-over injury accident approximately two miles East of Duluth Church on Duluth road. Sheriff deputies, as well as EMS and Fire, were dispatched and responded to the location.  Emergency units when arriving discovered a single vehicle roll-over accident, and the driver was lying outside of the vehicle.  The driver was believed to be the only occupant of the vehicle, and was pronounced dead at the scene. According to multiple reports a family member says the controversial and outspoken Reverend Fred Phelps the former head of the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka has died at the age of 84. The reports say the family member who was not identified reported Phelps passed away sometime Wednesday night. Phelps until recently was the head of Westboro which gained national attention for picketing at military funerals and funerals of AIDS victims who lost their battle with the disease and usually brought signs with anti-gay and anti-military slogans. Colton Kalmus and four relievers combined for a two-hitter in a 4-0 shutout of Air Force on Wednesday afternoon at Tointon Family Stadium.  Kalmus, a redshirt freshman, earned his first win as a Wildcat, without giving up a hit and striking out four in three and two thirds innings. Landon Busch, Jake Fromson, Ethan Landon and Jake Matthys finished out the game on the mound for K-State. R.J. A pair of Centennial League boys teams played for state titles as the league was as loaded as ever this season.  Manhattan High placed a quartet of players on the all-Centennial League teams after posting a 7-6 league record.  Junior forwards Payton Stephens and Pierson McAtee each were named to the second team, while senior Alex Stitt and sophomore Gabe Awbrey both received honorable mention.
