The 46th season of women’s basketball begins tonight at Bramlage Coliseum, as the Wildcats host Washburn in an exhibition game. K-State is 5-0 all time against the Ichabods Deb Patterson will supervise a squad filled with 7 freshmen or redshirt freshmen, including Breanna Lewis and Leticia Romero, who will join returning starters Bri Craig and Haley Texada. A Wabaunsee County woman has pleaded guilty to embezzling from the Bio-Security Research Institute at Kansas State University, U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom said Monday. Linda Kay Miller, 51, Alma, Kan., pleaded guilty to three counts of interstate transportation of fraudulently altered securities. In her plea, she admitted the crimes took place while she worked as an office manager for the institute from August 2007 to January 2013. The institute receives grant money from the federal government to provide infectious disease research programs that address threats to plant, animal and human health. MJ Massanet has been named the MIAA Hitter of the week. The 5-10 sophomore outside hitter is a native of Manhattan where she competed at Manhattan High School. Massanet had three double doubles as University Nebraska-Kearney went 3-0 at home last week. She averaged 4.56 kills and 4 digs per set and hit .326. She had 15 kills and 10 digs against Missouri Western before adding 15 kills and 14 digs against Southwest Baptist. Against Missouri Southern she hit .429 with 11 kills and 12 digs. While many of us may have heard about the Flint Hills Regional Council, the group’s new Executive Director Bill Clark is trying to get the latest word out to leaders in the community, with a presentation at Monday’s Intergovernmental Luncheon. Clark tells KMAN his goal is to educate people about what the Council is currently working on. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) Beechcraft Corp. CEO Bill Boisture says the company is “dangerously” close to reaching a deal with a potential buyer for its Hawker 4000 and Premier business jet assets. Boisture told The Wichita Eagle the potential buyer has plans for its composite manufacturing facility. But Boisture says he doesn’t think the buyer will restart jet production. He wouldn’t identify the company when he made his comments last week. Beechcraft shut down its business jet manufacturing as it reorganized during Chapter 11 bankruptcy last year. The assets are for sale as part of the restructuring. Beechcraft emerged from bankruptcy…
SALINA, Kan. (AP) Three Kansas Highway Patrol troopers face a civil lawsuit in the 2011 fatal shooting a 56-year-old man. The wrongful death lawsuit, filed earlier this month in Ottawa County District Court, accuses one trooper of unreasonable seizure and use of excessive force in the death of Larry Death Smith in October 2011. Two other troopers who were involved are also named in the lawsuit. The Salina Journal reports the people filing the lawsuit include Smith’s estate administrators and legal heirs. OLATHE, Kan. (AP) The family of a missing 22-year-old Olathe man is mystified by his disappearance a week ago. Brad Cook left home in Olathe on Oct. 20 without taking his cellphone or wallet. Shortly afterward, someone possibly Cook parked his motorcycle at a strip mall in De Soto. Cook hasn’t been seen since and his bank shows no financial activity. The Kansas City Star reports Cook worked for a construction cleanup company and took business classes at Johnson County Community College. His father, Jeff Cook, says his son seemed fine in the hours before he disappeared. He says Brad…
