A Manhattan student was one of 12 students honored Thursday for earning the top composite score on the A-C-T college readiness assessment. Austin Canady was recognized during the Kansas A-C-T State organization’s annual conference at the Hyatt REgency in Wichita. The other students were from Overland Park, Stillwell, Wichita, Shawnee Mission, and Girard. The students received an engraved plaque commemorating their achievement. Less then one-tenth of one percent of all test takers earn the top score of 36.

Eastbound and westbound K-18 from 56th Avenue to just west of K-113/Seth Child Road will be moved to the new westbound K-18 lanes and reduced to one lane in each direction (in a side by side configuration) for pavement reconstruction work sometime next Wednesday through Friday, (April 24-26), weather permitting. These lane closures will remain in place until late fall 2013. Crews still need to pave highway crossovers before this traffic switch can take place. The new West Stadium Center at Bill Snyder Family Stadium is set to be debuted during the 2013 season opener on Friday, August 30th against North Dakota State. With construction on the project progressing, K-State will make seating open for fans on the east and south side lower level bowls during the annual Purple/White Spring Game on Saturday, April 27th. Sections 13-19 and 20-28 will be open for fans, and they are asked to park in the east side lots only to avoid construction traffic on the west side. K-State women’s basketball coach Deb Patterson on Wednesday afternoon the fifth member of her 2013 recruiting class, Nashville, TN point guard Jailen Murphy. The 5-foot-9 player averaged 15 points per game for Brentwood Academy last season, and also averaged five rebounds, three steals, and two blocked shots a night. Murphy joins four players who inked their national letter-of-intent with K-State in November including fellow point guard Kindred Wesemann. The Pleasant Hill, MO native is 5-foot-6-inches tall. Jenny Barriga, junior in chemistry and biochemistry, Dodge City, has been awarded the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship, making her the university’s 69th Goldwater scholar. Kyle Snow, senior in chemical engineering, Eudora, and Brianne Pierce, junior in microbiology and premedicine, Wichita, have received honorable mentions in the competition. ATLANTA (AP) Wade Davis pitched five-hit ball for seven innings, Jeff Francoeur had a fourth-inning RBI single, and the Kansas City Royals stopped Atlanta’s 10-game winning streak with a 1-0 victory Wednesday.
