PRAIRIE VILLAGE, Kan. (AP) A Johnson County suburb has approved an ordinance that could mean the end of a popular holiday spectacle. The Prairie Village City Council passed an ordinance this week requiring permits for any special event that lasts five days or more and is likely to draw crowds. INDEPENDENCE, Kan. (AP) A southeastern Kansas woman is jailed on $1 million bond, accused of intentionally hitting and killing her boyfriend with a car after an argument. The Independence Daily Reporter says Martin “Moochie” Dunn (49) was pronounced dead Tuesday at an Independence hospital. His 21-year-old girlfriend was booked on suspicion of first-degree murder and made a first court appearance Wednesday. Family members and Independence police say the two have a child together. Wamego’s apparently in a position to save some serious money. At Tuesday’s City Commission meeting, City Manager Merl Page went over how the Public Building Commission (PBC) functions for facilities owned and operated by the City through the issuance of bonds. According to Page, PBC issued $1.85 million in bonds to renovate the city-owned hospital, and under the terms of the issuance, there is a redemption period that allows PBC to call the outstanding debt. Multiple bicycle thefts reported. Sometime between September 11th at 5:00 p.m. and September 18th at 11:45 a.m., three bicycles were taken from a bike rack outside of an apartment complex at 1215 Laramie st. The first victim, 23 year old Kansas State University student Crystal Gonzales reports that her 26 inch purple girls roadmaster bike worth $630 was stolen. The second victim, Aaron B. Volleyball The Manhattan High volleyball team had a successful night sweeping all three opponents they faced in last night’s quad. The other teams present were Topeka West, Concordia, and Topeka High, all of which were beaten in just two sets. Riley County and Wabaunsee also went at it last night playing two matches. Manhattan City Traffic Engineer Peter Clark gave a detailed presentation on several safety issues around the 2000 block of College Heights Toad. Those included a study which found the visibility around intersections to be severely lacking. To correct the problems Clark and city staff cleared vegetation around the area, and advised changes to parking and one multi-lane stop sign to help correct several of the safety issues. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) A new website allows Kansas voters to compare their views with those of candidates for the U.S. Senate, House and president. The interactive tool is called VoteEasy and was launched by the nonpartisan group Project Vote Smart. Voters can check their views on several critical issues against those of candidates who participated in a Project Vote Smart survey. For some candidates, the group researched public records to determine their positions. VoteEasy was launched in Kansas on Monday as part of a state-by-state national rollout. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Top administrators at the University of Kansas and Washburn University are preparing to sign an agreement to offer special classes in Topeka for people 50 and older. Kansas Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little and Washburn President Jerry Farley plan to participate in a signing ceremony Wednesday on the Washburn campus. Classes will be offered through the University of Kansas’ Lifelong Learning Institute, which provides courses in the arts, history, philosophy, culture, health and other popular topics.
