OSWEGO, Kan. (AP) A southeast Kansas family is reunited with their family dog nearly two months after it disappeared and somehow ended up 1,500 miles away. KWCH-TV reports Ty and Nikki Lewis and their two children picked up their Jack Russell terrier mix, Rascal, at the airport Saturday night. Rascal ran away Thanksgiving weekend, and several weeks later turned up at an animal shelter in San Diego. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) Wichita police say a 15-year-old has been arrested after threatening to cut off his older brother’s genitals during an argument over a video game. The Wichita Eagle reports the incident happened at 1:20 a.m. Sunday. Police say the 15-year-old pulled a knife, held it to his 20-year-old brother’s throat and made the threat. The brother wasn’t hurt, and police don’t know which video game prompted the fight. Police spokesman Sgt. Bart Brunscheen says the 15-year-old is listed as an active runaway in a separate case. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Advocates for impoverished Kansas residents say tougher welfare rules are making it hard for the state’s needy to pull themselves out of poverty. Members of Gov. Sam Brownback’s administration say the stricter policies are forcing people to find jobs instead of relying on handouts. For their first meeting of the new year, the Pottawatomie County Commissioners continued to see a number of items on their agenda. Over the past weekend, damage was done to the newly finished bridge located on Neuchatel Road, in rural Onaga. Sometime between December 22nd and December 27th, an unknown person or persons built fires on this bridge on two separate occasions. These fires have caused damage to the bridge that may range from $5,000 to $20,000. Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact the Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office at 785-457-3353. A reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible.
A Manhattan is behind bars after being arrested on two warrants . Riley County Police told reporters on Monday that just before 7:00 on Friday night, Michael Brooks (20) was taken into custody on two bench warrants that had been issued for prior offenses. The original charges were two counts of distribution of a controlled substance, and two counts of unlawful cultivation of drugs. The Riley County Police Department’s current narrow banding radio system is becoming outdated. Although previous modifications were made to make the system last longer, it is believed that the system was installed in the 1980’s. Details have been released regarding an incident of shots being fired Sunday evening. Riley County Police told reporters on Monday that they received a report around 8:20 pm on Sunday of shots being fired at 1704 Fair Lane. Upon arrival, they made contact with Cody Turnbough (19), who told them that he had been in an altercation with an acquaintance , and he had been shot in one knee by this acquaintance . K-State coach Bill Snyder is one of five finalists for the Bobby Bowden National Collegiate Coach of the Year Award. Voting by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association will start after the BCS title game on Monday night. Bowden will present the award to the winner on March 3rd in Birmingham, AL.
