For the first time since 2010, summer baseball will be back in the area as the Junction City Brigade announced their plans to play at Rathert Stadium this summer.  The Junction City Community Baseball Club will run the team as a non-profit organization. The Manhattan High girls fought and scrapped all night with Washburn Rural but never could get over the hump in a 44-34 loss in Topeka.   MHS didn’t trail by more than ten points until late in the fourth quarter, but didn’t have a lead outside of the first frame.  Erika Lane led all scorers with 21 for the Junior Blues and racked up 18 of those in the first half.  Elayna Spilker was the only Indian in double figures with ten points.  Spilker scored all ten of her points in the first half and was limited in the second…

State senator Tom Hawk and representative Sydney Carlin of Manhattan have given their reactions to Tuesday night’s state of the state address by governor Sam Brownback. Both lawmakers had things that they liked about the speech, as well as some issues that they did not agree with. Hawk said that there were some positives in the speech saying that he agreed with the governor’s assertion that Kansas has an attitude of self reliance as well as a can do attitude. “Shame on Mathis Physical Therapy” reads the banner that has been put up outside the therapy center on College Avenue.  A local carpenter’s union is protesting for the reason that non-union laborers were hired during the construction of the new office. Although Dr. Jeffrey Mathis does occupy that building, he said he had no part in the construction process.  “The Manhattan Medical Center owns the building, they are the ones who hired all the contractors.  If they have a problem with how my building was constructed, they should contact Manhattan Medical Center”, said Mathis. There are now seven candidates who are trying for a seat on the Manhattan City Commission. One name that’s probably familiar is Bob Strawn, a former Manhattan Mayor and City Commissioner. He announced his candidacy to KMAN news Wednesday morning, reminding us it’s been two years since he left the city commission, which he says has given him time to recharge the batteries, so to speak. After a man’s computer goes missing, he returns home to find the computer has been recovered, by a woman who is still standing inside his home. Chris Soder (34) of Manhattan, reported a burglary to the Riley County Police Department on Monday.  Soder, who is a U.S. Army soldier, reported that his Apple MacPro laptop was missing from his residence. Around 9:44 a.m. Tuesday morning, Soder came home to find that his laptop was returned, and a woman was standing in his home. Nuss describes herself as a seasoned member and office holder in numerous local organizations, as well as a well known community volunteer. During Tuesday’s meeting, the Manhattan City Commission unanimously authorized the purchase of property owned by Feather Field Farms, LLC, for improvements at the Manhattan Regional Airport. City Administration will pay over 1.5 million dollars to the Riley County Clerk of the District Court. Payment to the Court will be financed through issuing temporary notes. The primary reasons for the acquisition are the complete a Wildlife Fence around the Airport, while at the same time to protect the critical area around the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) operated electronic equipment used by pilots for navigating their aircraft.
