(AP)   Felix Hernandez won his fourth straight decision, Jesus Montero homered and drove in four runs as the Seattle Mariners defeated the Kansas City Royals 6-1 Thursday.  Hernandez (8-5) is 4-0 with a 1.37 ERA in his past seven starts since a loss to San Diego on June 12.  While he leads the majors with 143 strikeouts, Hernandez struck out only three, tying his season low.  He allowed one run and eight hits, throwing only 89 pitches in eight innings.  Hernandez worked out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the eighth, striking out Alcides Escobar and…

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP)   The Kansas City Royals signed 38-year-old catcher Jason Kendall to a minor league contract Thursday and assigned him to Class AA Northwest Arkansas.  Kendall, a three-time National League All-Star, has had two shoulder surgeries since he last played on Aug. 30, 2010, with Kansas City.  He has been working out with the Royals since spring training.  Kendall, a career .288 hitter, ranks fifth all-time with 2,025 games caught.

  The pedestrian bridge that will connect the Discovery Center and the Historic Train Depot has hit a turning point as the on-ramp for motorists wishing to use K-177 to 1-70 is now open. Motorists on K-18 traveling westbound and eastbound will be able to take the on-ramp to K-177 and travel south to i-70 to use the 313 exit interchange. Baril Construction Company, the primary contractor for the pedestrian project, will continue to work on the sidewalk, landscaping and other miscellaneous items for the next few weeks. FORT RILEY, Kan. – High winds damaged six aircraft located on Fort Riley’s Marshall Army Airfield a little after 6 Wednesday evening. No personnel were hurt in this incident. The aircraft, which belong to the 1st Infantry Division’s Combat Aviation Brigade, were in pre-flight status at the time in support of training flights scheduled for the day. In addition to the aircraft, a trailer and several buildings located on the airfield received minor damage. The battalion continued training Thursday. The incident is under investigation.

Representatives from the City of Manhattan, Riley County, Pottawatomie County and Geary County were present at the joint city/counties meeting Thursday evening as discussion of the MPO, or Metropolitan Planning Organization, continued. At the meering, Geary County Commissioner Ben Bennett made a request asking to allow Junction City and Geary County to be included within the boundaries of the MPO. Pottawatomie County, however, did not seem really invested in trying to gain more territory within the boundaries than necessary as Wamego has not been pushed within the lines. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Topeka city officials are asking residents to consider voluntarily conserving water. The Topeka Capital-Journal reports the request is in response to Gov. Sam Brownback’s recent declaration of drought conditions in Kansas. There are 82 counties in the state that have been declared federal drought disaster areas. Temperatures are expected to stay above the 100-degree mark for the next several days, and a heat advisory has also been issued for much of northeastern Kansas through Saturday. Topeka officials say the city has experienced high water usage by customers in recent weeks, but they say the city remains well…

ANTHONY, Kan. (AP) A century-old racetrack in south-central Kansas will ride into history Friday, when all of its equipment and assets are auctioned off. The Anthony Downs racetrack, which opened in 1904, closed in 2009 after losing simulcasting money when larger tracks in Kansas closed. KAKE-TV reports a group of people who lived near the quarter-mile track bought the property. The auction is being held to clear the area for potential development.
