BELLEVILLE, Kan. (AP) A Nebraska manufacturing company has announced plans to expand its facility in north-central Kansas, a move that will more than double its current workforce. The Kansas Department of Commerce said in a release Wednesday that Reinke Manufacturing Co., of Deshler, Neb., is expanding its facility in Belleville, pushing employment there to about 50 workers by the end of 2013. The current facility manufactures electrical assemblies. The department says the new facility will be about 20,000 square feet.

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) A 44-year-old Wichita woman has died after being shot by police officers. Wichita police Capt. Jeff Easter says the woman was shot after she ignored several commands to put down a knife and lunged at officers. The officers went to the woman’s home Tuesday night to investigate a domestic dispute. Easter says the woman was distraught when officers arrived. When she came out of the house, she lunged at the officers with a knife and was shot. She died at a Wichita hospital. KFDI reports it is still unclear how many times the woman was shot, and…

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) A former Sedgwick County elections official and Wichita city council member has been hired to fill a vacancy as inspector general for Kansas Medicaid programs. Bill Gale started work Monday as inspector general within the Kansas Department of Health and Environment’s Division of Health Care Finance. The position was created in 2007 when the division was a stand-alone agency known as the Kansas Health Policy Authority. The position has been vacant for about a year. The inspector general audits Kansas Medicaid programs and contracts, including three new agreements signed by the state with managed care providers. Medicaid…

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) The National Research Council is scheduled to release a new report that assesses three options for building a new biosecurity lab in Kansas. The review set for release Friday was requested by the Department of Homeland Security as it continues the process for building the National Bio- and Agro-Defense Facility on a site near Kansas State University. A panel of experts is determining if the lab will be built as planned, scaled back or if the government will keep its existing animal research capabilities at Plum Island, N.Y. The defense team for Luis Aguirre  rested on Wednesday morning at 11:45 am in the Riley County capital murder trial.  The trial is in the sentencing phase, and this morning saw the final witnesses for the defense taking the stand.  Aguirre has been found guilty of murdering his 18-year-old ex-girlfriend Tanya Maldonado, and their son Juan in October of 2009. Forensic psychologist Dr. George Athey, of the Heritage Mental Health Clinic, took the stand to testify on his findings on Luis Aguirre.  Dr. Athey told the court his testing showed that Aguirre shows some brain dysfunction, but no tendency to…

K-State’s all-time leading scorer continues to thrive with the Philadelphia 76ers during the week-long NBA Summer League in Orlando.  Jacob Pullen paced the 76ers with 23 points on 8-of-14 shooting, including 4-of-7 from three point range in a 84-80 loss to the Utah Jazz on Tuesday morning. Pullen notched 15 points in a 6 point loss to the Indiana Pacers on Monday. WICHITA, Kan. (AP)   Former K-State quarterback Michael Bishop and hoops legend Willie Murrell are among the nine members of the 2012 class of the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame. Bishop was the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy in 1998, setting several school records along the way.  He was 22-3 as a starter at K-State, and passed and ran for 59 total touchdowns in his two seasons. Murrell was a first team all-American and led the Wildcats to the 1964 Final Four.  He averaged 20.6 points and 10.7 rebounds over the course of his career in purple. Three area legislators received recognition Tuesday from a group calling itself “Economic Lifelines” for their support of transportation legislation described as pro-jobs. The group’s Chief Executive Julie Lorenz talked about the importance of transportation programs in creating jobs and economic value.
