In a trade announced on Sunday night, the Kansas City Royals have acquired starting pitchers James Sheilds and Wade Davis from the Tampa Bay Rays for number one prospect Wil Myers. The trade which had been rumored for days went through late Sunday night and also involves a couple of other Royals prospects. Kansas City also sent right-hander Jake Odorizzi, left-hander Mike Montgomery and third baseman Patrick Leonard to Tampa Bay. Jamaal Charles ripped of an 80-yard touchdown run on the first play from scrimmage Sunday afternoon at Cleveland Browns Stadium, unfortunately for Kansas City there were still more than 59 minutes left in the game and the Chiefs could not muster anything else on offense as the Cleveland Browns steadily pulled away for a 30-7 victory. What was widely speculated for weeks became official Saturday night in New York City as Texas A&M Quarterback Johnny Manziel became the first Freshman ever to win the coveted Heisman Trophy. Manziel beat out Notre Dame Linebacker Manti Te’o and K-State Quarterback Collin Klein. Manziel captured 2,029 votes to finish first, Te’o received 1,706 votes while Klein garnered 894 votes. Less than 24 hours after sweeping both games from Dodge City, the Manhattan High School Basketball teams took the floor once again on Saturday afternoon and when the day was done each team had another victory in hand. The MHS Girls downed Great Bend at the newly-refurbished MHS gym in a 59-50 decision. After leading 35-18 at halftime, the Tribe held a steady lead through the second half as Darby Price and Caroline Ballard each poured in 19 points. A 61-year old Manhattan Woman was treated at Mercy Regional Health Center for injuries sustained during an aggravated robbery Saturday afternoon. According to a press release from the Riley County Police Department Jessica Farmer told authorities that she was struck by a blunt object and her purse was taken from her as she was walking in an alley in the 900 block of Osage at around 1:30 p.m. Farmer described the suspect who fled as thinly built and about five feet eight inches tall wearing a black jacket and black hat. In a back and forth game the Kansas State Wildcats were able to survive their first true road test of the season as they held off a scrappy George Washington team 65-62 Saturday afternoon in Washington, D.C. Angel Rodriguez led the Wildcats with 17 points and sank three consecutive free throws during a critical point of the second half, free throws that ultimately provided the Wildcats their winning victory margin. The Manhattan city hall has a new Christmas tree to greet visitors entering the building.  Mayor Loren Pepperd says that the city purchased the tree at last week’s festival of trees presented by RSVP of the Flint Hills. The tree purchased was one that benefited the USO of Fort Riley. The money from the tree as well as the gifts under it, all went to support the USO.
