A recent Kansas study found that the number of students receiving free school lunches more than doubled the expected count in the 2023-2024 school year, and said many should not have qualified. The Kansas Legislative Division of Post Audit (LPA) estimated up to 3,200 students were eligible for free student lunches. However, this was significantly less than the number who qualified but were likely ineligible, according to the LPA’s study, which released on Monday. A Kansas State offensive lineman is recovering after an undisclosed “medical situation.” Ohio State transfer George Fitzpatrick is recuperating and improving after being hospitalized after an in-practice incident last Wednesday. “George had a medical situation to which the training staff quickly responded,” K-State and Fitzpatrick’s family said in a joint statement to the media on Monday. “He is improving every day and we appreciate all who have cared for and supported him as he continues to recover.” To view the full article visit theMercury.com. By Rose Gruenbacher Riley County commissioners on Monday unanimously voted to have MakeMyMove proceed with an application for a federal grant on behalf of the county. MakeMyMove is a company that facilitates relocating households to areas looking for new residents. Commissioners in Thursday’s meeting decided to move forward in the process of a grant application through the state of Kansas to bring new households into the county. The RCPD is investigating the theft of a cargo trailer reported Monday afternoon in the 1800 block of Fair Lane. According to the RCPD, officers filed a report around 4:42 p.m. on July 21 after it was discovered that a white enclosed cargo trailer had been stolen. The trailer belonged to Affordable Electric. The estimated value of the stolen trailer is approximately $5,000. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Riley County Police Department or Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. Demarkaus Newman, 38, of Wichita, was arrested on July 21, 2025, at approximately 12:15 p.m. on his Riley County District Court warrant for failure to appear. The RCPD is investigating two separate thefts reported over the weekend involving a stolen motorcycle and an electric bicycle, with combined losses totaling more than $8,000. The first incident occurred on the morning of July 18th in the 900 block of Moro Street. Officers filed a report for theft after a 21-year-old man reported that his 2012 Harley Davidson motorcycle had been taken by an unknown suspect.
