TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Topeka is having an unusual special election involving only a single polling place where some voters received the wrong ballots in the state’s primary election. The polling site at the Light of the World Christian Center opened Tuesday, and the results there will settle a Republican primary for a Kansas House seat. But only 432 voters are eligible to participate. Some of those voters received the wrong ballots during the Aug. 7 primaries. BURLINGTON, Kan. (AP) The continuing drought is causing concern about operating the Wolf Creek Nuclear Power Plant. Officials say the dwindling water levels of a reservoir used to cool the plant near Burlington do not pose any safety risk. The Kansas Water Office projects the John Redmond Reservoir will be almost dry by Nov. 1, if current weather patterns persist. Wolf Creek officials say it would be difficult to operate the plant if the drought continues for the next several months. SALINA, Kan. (AP) The Salina City Council is scheduled to vote in two weeks on a petition to repeal an expanded nondiscrimination ordinance. The council in May added sexual orientation and gender identity to the city’s anti-discrimination ordinance. Soon after, opponents began gathering signatures for petitions to repeal the ordinance. City Manager Jason Gage told city commissioners Monday they will be asked to vote on the petition on Sept. 10. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is taking steps in Kansas to prevent the spread of a beetle that is killing ash trees in the Northeast and Midwest. Starting Friday, campers at Perry Lake in northeastern Kansas will be barred from bringing in firewood that did not originate in surrounding Jefferson County. The Corps is also banning all firewood from ash trees, no matter where it comes from. The goal is to protect Perry Lake’s trees from the emerald ash borer beetle, which was recently detected in northwestern Missouri’s Platte County. The Corps says that’s the beetle’s…

Manhattan is one of 18 cities throughout Kansas selected for projects slated to improve intersections and address road deficiencies under the Kansas Department of Transportation’s Geometric Improvement Program. Manhattan is receiving one of the more sizable amounts of $900,000 for fiscal year 2015. The state will provide $10.9 million for the projects, which will be built at an estimated cost of $15.4 million. The cities will provide matching funds to cover the remainder of the costs. The Geometric Improvement Program is funded under the T-WORKS transportation program, which was passed by the 2010 Legislature.

Tay Bender served as K-State’s #2 quarterback in the spring after graduating early from Lincoln Southwest High School in Nebraska.  Rumors began to surface a couple weeks ago about Bender leaving the Wildcat program.  K-State coach Bill Snyder confirmed Monday on the Big 12 teleconference that Bender has left the team, and that Bender has also left school by returning to his home state.   Snyder says the #2 quarterback, whether it be Daniel Sams or Sam Johnson, when called upon, will be used in a spot that best suits them. After an undefeated weekend in the Varney’s Invitational, the K-State volleyball team moved up one spot to #21 in the latest AVCA top 25.  The Cats earned wins over UC Irvine, Oakland, and Oregon State at Ahearn Fieldhouse.  K-State will head for the Bluejay Invitational this weekend, hosted by Creighton, who’s receiving votes in the Coaches’ poll.  In the Big 12, Texas rose to #2, and Iowa State slid to #15.  Oklahoma is receiving votes.  Nebraska is now #1 after knocking off defending national champ UCLA.

(AP)   Brady Quinn has been picked as the backup quarterback of the Kansas City Chiefs, leaving Ricky Stanzi at No. 3 on the depth chart heading into their preseason finale.  Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel told the team of his decision before Monday’s practice.  The race to back up Matt Cassel had been one of the few open contests for Kansas City during training camp.  Quinn signed as a free agent in the offseason, and Stanzi was No. 3 a year ago.  Tight end Kevin Boss missed practice for what Crennel called personal reasons.  Defensive backs Jalil…

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP)   Sporting Kansas City forward Teal Bunbury will miss the rest of the season after tearing ligaments in his left knee during a draw with the New York Red Bulls.  The injury occurred Sunday night as Bunbury was leaping in the air to set up Kei Kamara for a goal.  Bunbury remained in the game for several minutes but was eventually substituted out.  The extent of the injury was revealed Monday.
