OLATHE, Kan. (AP) The leader of a northeastern Kansas school district has been named Kansas superintendent of the year. The Kansas City Star reports that Olathe’s Marlin Berry is the recipient of the award from the Kansas School Superintendents’ Association. The award was announced this week. It also allows Berry to select a high school senior for a $1,000 scholarship. The association says the award is based on “professionalism, communication, community involvement and leadership in meeting the needs of students.” Berry has been an administrator with Olathe Public Schools since 2007 and superintendent since 2010. MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) Kansas State is conducting research that could help high-speed rail systems better handle winter conditions. The university is leading a three-year study that looks at the freeze-thaw durability of concrete railroad ties. The school says the work is essential in efforts to develop safe and durable high-speed rail systems. Assistant civil engineering professor Kyle Riding is collaborating with researchers from the university’s Institute of Environmental Research, the United Arab Emirates and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Thursday marks the start of the cold weather rule period in Kansas, restricting utility cutoffs for nonpayment of bills. The rule is in effect from Nov. 1 to March 31. It prohibits shutoffs of residential electricity or natural gas service when temperatures are expected to be at or below 35 degrees over the following 24 hours. Utilities also must contact a customer 24 hours before a disconnection, and offer a 12-month payment plan for the customer to maintain or re-establish service. Part one of the animal cruelty case in Pottawatomie County has concluded. County Attorney Sherri Schuck tells KMAN that Marcia Toy, 44, and Derek Toy, 41, have both been found guilty on all 10 counts of animal cruelty. Their sentencing is scheduled for December 4th at 10 am. The other three individuals involved in this case are scheduled to have their trials at a later date.
What was scheduled to be a week long trial, ended early as the jury came to a decision Wednesday. According to published reports, Domingo “Diablo” Soto, 42, was found guilty of aiding and abetting in the first degree murder of Steve Freele. Soto was also found guilty of possession of marijuana, possession of cocaine with the intent to distribute and possession of methamphetamine with the intent to distribute. Soto was not, however, guilty of being in possession of stolen property. Sentencing for Soto is scheduled for December 17th at 3:30 PM.
KMAN has received further information regarding the Pedestrian-Vehicle accident reported at 10th Street and Ft Riley Boulevard. Emergency personnel report that there were a couple injuries involved in the incident which includes a 25 year old female and a 15 month old child. The 25 year old female was struck by the vehicle in the incident and is complaining of back pain. The 15 month old child was a in a stroller, but was not struck by the vehicle involved. The child did receive a bruise on their upper lip from the stroller being tipped over. The two were taken to Mercy Regional Health Center. At approximately 12:26pm…
Nino Williams scored 14 points as the K-State men’s basketball team made their season debut with a 81-61 exhibition victory over Washburn on Tuesday night at Bramlage Coliseum. Jordan Henriquez also chipped in with 13 points, as both he and Williams also grabbed nine rebounds. Rodney McGruder and freshman DJ Johnson each added 10 points. Wildcats coach Bill Snyder has a policy to not discuss injuries, but Walker tweeted on Tuesday that he was on crutches and teammates indicated he may not return this season.
