WICHITA, Kan. (AP) Wichita investigators are trying to figure out who took a half-dozen historic headstones from a cemetery and threw them into a roadside ditch. A Sedgwick County sheriff’s deputy came across the headstones Monday. The oldest dated to 1867, and the newest to 1907. Investigators said Tuesday they’ve determined the stones came from Wichita’s Highland Cemetery. Photos of the headstones were released to the news media, and people responded with numerous tips.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) A bill permitting Kansas to join an interstate compact to end federal rules for health care programs has received first-round approval in the state House. The measure advanced on an unrecorded 80-37 vote Tuesday. The bill is expected to pass on final action Wednesday and go to the Senate. It’s a protest from the Republican-dominated Legislature against health care policies championed by Democratic President Barack Obama. Georgia, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas have already enacted similar laws encouraging a compact, which would then let states run programs like Medicaid and Medicare as they see fit. A K-State student now knows when she will face charges in connection with the December murder of Steve Freel. A March fifth arraignment has been set for Reyna Youdath, 18, charged in connection with robberies committed that were reportedly connected to the December 2011 murder of Freel, whose body was discovered on a dirt road north of Manhattan. Youdath was listed as a Kansas State student at the time of her arrest in December and faces charges of Aggravated Robbery and conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery. A Manhattan man was sentenced to more than two and a half years with the Kansas Department of corrections  for sexual exploitation of a child. Jeremy Carroll, 37, was sentenced to 35 months during an appearance Tuesday in Riley County District court. In addition Carroll must register as an offender for 25 years after he gets out of prison. He was taken into custody last summer following an undercover investigation targeting child exploitation offenders. Wamego’s City Commission meeting was brief, but productive Tuesday night, taking all of 15 minutes. City Manager Merl Page asked the governing body to approve a Resolution of Intent to issue Utility Revenue Bonds not to exceed 1-point 1-million dollars if needed.  The Commission recently approved major upgrades to their Power Plant and have the funds in reserve to pay for the upgrade, but Page noted there are environmental issues that require compliance, and the need to upgrade metering with analog readers that were not foreseen.   By having this Resolution of Intent in place, Page said it allows the City…

Riley County police are investigating a reported rape of a 17 year old woman, allegedly occurring Monday night shortly after eight. The woman told police the rape occurred in Riley county and involved a person known to her. According to RCPD Lt. Josh Kyle, the case is being actively investigated.

Mental health matters occupied a big portion of Tuesday’s Riley County law board meeting, with the first hour of the meeting primarily involving discussion of a possible crisis intervention team program, though no definitive action was taken. For the second time in just a little over 72 hours, the Kansas State Wildcats Men’s Basketball team knocked off a Top 10 team on its home floor.  After edging #10 Baylor 57-56 in Waco on Saturday, K-State went into Columbia, Missouri Tuesday evening, a place that has not been friendly to the Wildcats over the years.  In fact, coming into the game K-State had dropped 25 of its last 27 games in Mid-Missouri since 1985.
