The Big East has filed a lawsuit against TCU for failing to pay the conference $5 million after the school reneged on an agreement to become a member and chose to join the Big 12 instead.  The Big East filed the lawsuit Monday in U.S. District Court in Washington.  TCU agreed in November 2010 to join the Big East, beginning this July.  The Big East contends TCU agreed to pay the league $5 million if it did not follow through on that agreement.  In October 2011, TCU accepted an invite to the Big 12.  In the lawsuit, the Big East…

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP)   A University of Missouri men’s basketball fan who regularly traveled with the team to NCAA Tournament games is among 10 Columbia residents facing federal drug conspiracy charges.  The Columbia Daily Tribune reports that Levi Coolley was on the team plane on four Tiger tournament trips from 2009 to 2011.    Coolley also joined a team flight from Austin, Texas, in January and received complimentary tickets from Missouri players at nine games over two seasons.  In March, FBI agents arrested Coolley on felony cocaine distribution charges at the Missouri team hotel in Omaha, Neb., before their most…

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) A former executive of a Manhattan high-tech company has been charged with defrauding the United States by creating false invoices on government contracts to help the struggling firm. Aaron Madison was executive vice president and chief operating officer of Manhattan-based NanoScale, a small company that makes advanced chemistry products. Prosecutors filed a criminal information Monday in federal court in Wichita charging Madison with wire fraud. Prosecutors say 90 percent of the firm’s business came from government contracts, most with the Defense Department. An Ogden convenience store was the victim along with two employees of an aggravated robbery. Monday morning around 2, 21 year old Carolyn Thornton and 20 year old Shanequa Martin were working at the Casey General Store when a thin, white male entered the store and demanded cash. An undisclosed amount of cash was taken from the location by the man who was described as wearing a blue hoodie, camo mask, wire framed glasses with thick frames and weighing about 130 to 150 pounds. As reported earlier, USD 378 Superintend Brad Starnes and his family had significant damage to their home due to a fire Sunday evening. At about 5:45 pm, the call came in and it took firefighters about two hours to get the blaze under control due to high winds. Dozens of newcomers filed for legislative seats before Monday’s noon deadline, and several legislators opted not to run again.
