No foul play is suspected in a case Riley County police are labeling ‘an apparent suicide’ According to reports, RCPD received a call late Tuesday evening regarding an unconscious person. Officers were then dispatched to 856 S. Manhattan Avenue where upon entry they discovered Maritza Sumners, 38, not breathing. Police say it became obvious after a few minutes that Sumners was dead, with preliminary indications pointing toward drug overdose being the cause. Sumner’s next of kin have been notified. An autopsy will be conducted at a later date to confirm the cause of death.

The Flint Hills Discovery Center Advisory Board met Monday to discuss details involving its opening.  Director Bob Workman is excited for the grand opening coming up in a couple of months. “One of the most important topics we discussed was our proposed membership program,” Workman says. “We’ll be selling memberships to the Discovery Center starting in March.” The proposed membership structure will be going before the Manhattan City Commission on Feb. 28 for approval. A Riley County Jail inmate has entered a plea of no contest to battery of a corrections officer. Daniel Weaver, 25, was charged last year in connection with an incident at the Riley county jail in December of 2010, involving the battery of a corrections officer at the jail, while being held on another charge. Weaver entered the plea in Riley County district court Monday. Weaver’s sentencing is set for March 26th.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) Kansas retailers say they’ll have plenty of helium on hand to blow up those heart-shaped Valentine’s Day balloons despite tight supplies across the country. The Lawrence Journal-World reports that retailers have been stockpiling helium for months to meet Tuesday’s expected demand. Marty Fish, head of the Wichita-based International Balloon Association, says that stores around the country have been coping with the helium squeeze. The nation’s helium supply has been reduced in recent years because the gas is used in industries that take priority over retailing. Helium is used in hospitals to cool MRI machines and for other…

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) A farm equipment trade group says January sales of combines in the United States were down 50 percent from the same month a year ago. A report released Monday by the Association of Equipment Manufacturers shows 445 combines were sold in January, compared with 890 sold in January 2011. But tractor sales were up. The association says that slightly more than 9,300 tractors were sold nationwide last month, an increase of 3.5 percent from January of last year.
