GREAT BEND, Kan. (AP) Wildlife officials say five whooping cranes are spending the winter in south-central Kansas. The five endangered birds have been on private land surrounding the Quivira National Wildlife Refuge and Cheyenne Bottoms State Wildlife Area. Dan Severson, Quivira’s refuge manager, said in a news release Tuesday that the birds include a family of three, one juvenile crane and a single adult. The birds usually stop in Kansas on their way to the Texas coast, but these birds appear to be settling in. Wamego city commissioners are putting the city’s 2012 plan in place. At Tuesday’s Commission meeting, City Manager Merl Page said the City received a request from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment for the right-of-way to probe and take water samples from in and around the downtown area. According to Page, there is currently no formal agreement in writing, but he asked for authority for the City to sign the completed documents after review by the City Attorney Jake Pugh. A former Kansas State student was in magistrate court on Tuesday to undergo proceedings on charges of aggravated robbery. Reyna Youdath’s case was put up for another status hearing on Feb. 21 at 1 p.m. According to police reports Youdath was involved in a robbery in Manhattan on the 6th of December where the victim was gagged and tied as her house was burglarized. The charges were brought about by an investigation into the homicide of Steve Freel on December 7. Youdath is being held with a bond set at $250,000.
A new development in the New Year’s day murder at a local motorcycle clubhouse on Fairlane, with Riley County police asking for help in locating a woman who reportedly was in the area and might have additional information. The woman is described as tall, six foot or more, and light skinned, possibly named Melissa. In addition she reportedly was riding in a small black vehicle with two other females. A rash of smashed windows at two apartment complexes has caused over $14,000. Riley County Police Lieutenant Josh Kyle tells KMAN officers are investigating a series of broken out windows in both cars and the offices at the Woodway Apartments and also at the University Crossing Apartments. According to Kyle, windows were smashed out of vehicles belonging to David Hogan, Ryan Schram, and Matthew Frost at the University Crossing Apartments. A multiple car accident in Manhattan Sunday morning has left a Topeka man in critical condition. According to Riley County Police reports released Tuesday, 60-year-old Jerome Little of Topeka was southbound on Tuttle Creek Boulevard just after 11 a-m Sunday, when he approached the intersection with Leavenworth Avenue at a high rate of speed. Little failed to stop at the traffic light, slamming into the rear-end of a vehicle driven by Abdelmalik Hussein, 47, of Kansas City, Kansas. Sewer systems are an essential part of any city, and last night’s Manhattan City Commission work session concerned certain sewer lines that may need to be improved. After years of studying flows and other factors affecting the city’s sanitary sewer lines, improvements are being considered. Among the possible improvements that were discussed were widening some high-capacity sewer lines, and lining others with a fiberglass inlay to prevent leakage and other issues. The Commission also took under consideration a plan to update floodplain maps, in light of last year’s flooding along the Wildcat Creek watershed.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) Kansas City Royals owner David Glass says small-market franchises must do whatever it takes to lock up young talent long term, even if it’s a sometimes risky proposition. Glass says he expects General Manager Dayton Moore to begin discussions with first baseman Eric Hosmer and third baseman Mike Moustakas as early as this season. Fake Patty’s day in Aggieville continues to generate a lot of discussion, and Tuesday’s Riley County law board was no exception. Jeff Koenig of Big Poppi’s Bicycle and who lives on North 14th street, described a woman getting sick on his porch and a man trying to break into his home during last year’s event, which he describes as mayhem. Koenig was asked what his solution would be, to authorize overwhelming force to shut down the party. The Riley County Police Department has released more information on the weekend shooting that left one Manhattan man hospitalized. As first reported on KMAN Monday morning, officers with the RCPD responded to the intersection of North Manhattan Avenue and Flint Hills Place, where they discovered Marcus Cooper, 51, of Manhattan with a gun shot wound, with the perpetrator identified as Tyrell Brown, 26, also of Manhattan. According to a press release from RCPD Lieutenant Josh Kyle, Cooper gave Mr. Brown a ride to church earlier that morning.
