Kansas Governor Sam Brownback has ordered that the State of Kansas fly flags at half-staff on Friday August 19th to honor a fallen soldier. Chief Warrant Officer 2 Bryan Nichols died on August 6th while serving his country in Afghanistan. CW2 Nichols was assigned to the 7th Battalion, 158th Aviation Regiment.  He was one of 30 Americans killed when their Chinook helicopter crashed after taking enemy fire. The Manhattan – Ogden school board had some major decisions to make during their meeting. The meeting started with a work session to go over the construction schedule for Woodrow Wilson and Theodore Roosevelt Elementary.   Though progress is being made, classes will be starting a little later.  The board unanimously passed a motion to move the start date for Woodrow Wilson and Theodore Roosevelt from Wednesday August 24 to Friday August 26 with a full day.  This was thought to be the best option and the safest for the students.  Discussion will continue with how the day and a…

Arrests have been made in the murder of Kevin Lynn Cockrum by the Riley County Police Department this afternoon  afternoon. 24 year old Justin Charles Taylor of 619 Vattier Street Manhattan Kansas has been charged with 2nd degree murder.  20 year old Levertis Lee Horne of 513 N. 16th Street was arrested and charged with aiding 2nd degree murder. Cockrum was found lying on the ground unconscious  on the 11th of August in an alley on the north side of the 1000 block of Moro Street.  Cockrum later sucumbed to his injuries after being flown to Via Christi Hospital in…

Convicted Ponzi scheme architect Nevin Shapiro has told Yahoo! Sports he provided impermissible benefits to dozens of University of Miami athletes, most of whom were involved with the football program. Implicated in the report is K-State linebacker Arthur Brown and running back Bryce Brown.  The allegations come when Arthur Brown played two years at Miami before transferrring to K-State, and when Bryce Brown originally committed to Miami.  He later decommitted, signed with Tennessee, and eventually transferred to K-State.  Yahoo! The Dallas Morning News is reporting that Big 12 Commissioner Dan Beebe could soon give Texas A&M a deadline to decide if they will remain in the league or head to the SEC.  Beebe says the other nine members of the Big 12 deserve to know A&M’s intentions.  He says their decision cannot drag out, as it puts the conference in an “untenable position”, and there has to be a “very short time period for an institution to commit”. OKLAHOMA CITY (AP)   Oklahoma State megabooster T. Boone Pickens believes the Big 12 will survive the latest conference realignment threat, and suggests that Texas A&M stay put instead of joining the Southeastern Conference.  Pickens called the idea of moving to the SEC “a big mistake for Texas A&M” because the Aggies would essentially be moving out of Texas. (AP) The Kansas City Chiefs have a kicking conundrum, just like the rest of the NFL.  New rules putting kickoffs at the 35 yard line were designed to prevent injuries caused by high-speed collisions in the return game, but moving the placement five yards nearer midfield also took much of the drama out of special teams.  Just about every kicker in the NFL now has the ability to boom the ball into the end zone. KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) A 40-year-old man has been sentenced to life for selling heroin linked to deaths in three Kansas counties and many non-fatal overdoses. Prosecutors said Verdale Handy and his drug trafficking crews in Kansas City, Kan., sold in suburban Johnson County and owned houses that they charged other dealers to sell from. The Kansas City Star reported Handy was sentenced Tuesday in federal court for drug charges and trying to kill a witness. Prosecutors said deaths linked to the drug scheme occurred in Wyandotte, Johnson and Leavenworth counties.

EMPORIA, Kan. (AP) Emporia firefighters have found a body while fighting a mobile home fire. Fire officials said smoke was coming from the home when crews arrived Tuesday afternoon. Officials haven’t released the name, age or gender of the victim found inside the structure. The fire was extinguished quickly and no one else was injured. The cause of the fire hasn’t been determined, but The Topeka Capital-Journal reported that an overloaded circuit is suspected of sparking the blaze. No other details were immediately released.
