(AP)   Eric Hosmer and Jeff Francoeur hit back-to-back home runs in the second inning, Danny Duffy won for the first time in more than a month and the Kansas City Royals beat the Oakland Athletics 7-4 on Tuesday.  Salvador Perez added three hits while six players drove in runs for the Royals, who have scored 29 runs in their last three road games.  Jemille Weeks had three hits and two RBIs for Oakland, which has dropped two straight after sweeping Seattle over the weekend.  Duffy (4-8) allowed only four hits and had four strikeouts over 6 1-3…

Fall is in the air and the City of Wamego is getting ready. At Tuesday’s City Commission, City Manager Merl Page introduced Columbian Theatre’s Director Ariane Chapman and the Oz Museum Director, who were asking permission to have Lincoln Street from 4th to 6th closed during OZtoberfest scheduled for October 1st and 2nd. Because Lincoln Street is also Highway 99, closing the street requires permission from the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT). As Manhattan’s North End continues to grow and attract businesses, you may be wondering what sort of plan there is for some green space amongst the many buildings. That’s just the question the City Commission took up at their meeting Tuesday night. The Commission was presented with three plans for pocket parks along Leavenworth street and one on Osage street. (AP) – Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops is willing to play wherever his school’s president and athletic director decide is best, even if it means a move by the top-ranked Sooners could trigger the nation’s first 16-team super conference. “It seems that’s the direction the world’s going,” Stoops said Monday. “So if it is, so be it.” Stoops stopped short on speculating what might happen or saying what he prefers. (AP)   Billy Butler homered twice and drove in three runs, Alex Gordon doubled home the go-ahead run and the Kansas City Royals scored five times in the ninth inning to beat the Oakland Athletics 11-6 Monday.  Jeff Francoeur, Eric Hosmer and Mike Moustakas had two RBIs apiece and Melky Cabrera also drove in a run for the Royals, who avoided being mathematically eliminated for at least one more day.  Scott Sizemore hit a three-run homer for the A’s, who had won four straight.  David DeJesus, Josh Willingham and Kurt Suzuki each drove in a run.  Butler…

Riley county firefighters had a busy weekend, fighting two major fires. Several outbuildings were destroyed or damaged in a fire at 8080 Anderson, belonging to Fred Schurle. Riley County Fire Chief Pat Collins tells KMAN the fire apparently started with burning of trash that got out of control. In addition to the outbuildings, miscellaneous items stored between the buildings were destroyed. Three buildings were destroyed and two were damaged. A firefighter was taken to the hospital by private vehicle for treatment related to the heat. 10 trucks from six different stations and 33 firefighters responded. A Union Pacific Railroad  coal train has derailed in Pottawatomie County near the town of Emmett at 3:50am Monday morning.  According to Union Pacific Railroad spokesman Mark Davis no one was injured in the incident. The train was comprised of 56 cars, and was traveling southbound at the time. Union Pacific Railroad  crews have been working nonstop to clear the rail cars, and begin the process of rebuilding the track.  The total damages haven’t been assessed, and an investigation into the cause of the derailment will be conducted by several specialized teams of investigators. Face painting, pictures, and give-aways were the highlight of Sunday’s reptile expo. The Fourth Annual Konza Reptile Breeders Expo took place at the Clarion Hotel on Richards Drive. The expo not only featured reptiles of all kinds, but also displayed several insects from the Kansas State University Insect Zoo. “You could spend anywhere from $20 to $20,000 on some of these creatures,” Expo Coordinator Allison Karnowski says. “You can either get something that is very high maintenance or something very low maintenance.” Karnowski commented that she had seen many bearded dragons as well as leopard geckos being sold when…
