During its Monday meeting, the Riley County commission applauded the efforts of the police department for the arrest of 56-year old George Morgan.
Morgan, a habitual offender, was booked last week on charges of aggravated burglary and attempted robbery. Only two victims have been identified presently but the damage extends well beyond the first two homes.
“He’s responsible for at least 16 residential burglaries during a three to four day period,” police captain Tim Hegarty said. “We don’t know how many he’s been responsible for since he moved back into the community.”
Hegarty feels the arrest will go a long way in restoring a sense of security in Manhattan neighborhoods.
“It’s an example of what a huge difference one person, one repeat offender, can make on a community,” Hegarty said. “This person is solely responsible for most of the burglaries that occurred last week and is probably going to be responsible for the increase we’ve seen over the course of the year.”
RCPD is holding Morgan on a $50,000 bond.
