WACO, Texas – On a night when senior Markquis Nowell and Keyontae Johnson combined for 56 points, it was junior Ismael Massoud who proved to be the difference in overtime, as his 3-pointer with 32 seconds lifted Kansas State to a thrilling 97-95 win over No. 19/17 Baylor on Saturday night before 9,211 fans at Ferrell Center. Baylor’s Adam Flagler turned the ball over with 5.3 seconds and Nowell was fouled immediately, making the first free throw before missing the second – snapping a streak of 29 consecutive makes – to allow the Bears’ one more opportunity to either win the game or force a second overtime, but junior Caleb…

LAS VEGAS (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs don’t believe in simply wrapping up the AFC’s top seed. They want to have fun doing it. Late in the first half Saturday against the Las Vegas Raiders, the Chiefs huddled and spun in a circle, broke out into the shotgun with running back Jerick McKinnon taking a direct snap. He faked a handoff to Kadarius Toney and pitched to quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who then threw to Toney for a 9-yard touchdown. But, it didn’t count. A holding penalty brought back the play. The Chiefs then scored anyway to take full control…
LANSING, Kan. (AP) — State investigators are probing what they’re calling a homicide at the Lansing Correctional Facility. Kansas Bureau of Investigation officials said in a news release Saturday that the facility contacted the agency around 9:30 p.m. Friday to report the suspicious death of an inmate. Investigators determined that a 25-year-old inmate called guards to his cell about 8:30 p.m. that night. There they found 62-year-old inmate Gary Raburn dead Friday. He appeared to have been strangled, KBI officials said. An autopsy is pending. KBI officials said a suspect has been identified but released no further information.
TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Kansas’ recently reelected Democratic governor and Republican legislators are headed for a clash over how their financially flush state should cut taxes, and abortion opponents are wrestling with what ideas to pursue following last year’s decisive statewide vote favoring abortion rights. Gov. Laura Kelly is scheduled to take the oath of office for her second four-year term in a ceremony at noon Monday. The Republican-controlled Legislature is set to convene in the afternoon for an annual session that’s expected to last into early May. Both Kelly and leaders of the Republicans’ supermajorities in both chambers are making tax…
TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — The Kansas Bureau of Investigation said Friday that it has distributed 30 charging affidavits to prosecutors as part of its investigation into sexual abuse by Catholic priests but, so far, no charges have been filed. Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt released the KBI’s report concluding an investigation of the state’s four Roman Catholic dioceses in Wichita, Salina, Dodge City and Kansas City, Kansas. The bureau said it would continue to investigate clergy associated with the Society of Saint Pius X, a breakaway Catholic group with a large branch in St. Marys. A summary of the report…

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Kansas water experts are sounding an alarm decades in the making: Farmers and ranchers in the state’s western half must stop pumping more water out of a vast aquifer than nature puts back each year or risk the economic collapse of a region important to the U.S. food supply. That warning is setting up a big and messy fight for the annual session of the Kansas Legislature set to open Monday. The Kansas Water Authority is telling lawmakers that Kansas needs to break sharply with its decadeslong policy of slowing depletion while still allowing water levels…
