(AP) Whit Merrifield had two homers and a career-high six RBIs, Homer Bailey pitched into the eighth inning and the Kansas City Royals beat the Seattle Mariners 9-0 on Tuesday night. The Royals jumped on struggling starter Yusei Kikuchi to get their third straight win. Kikuchi (3-5) allowed six runs in five innings. (AP) Gary Woodland has captured his first major golf championship by holding off the two-time defending U.S. Open champion. Woodland closed with a 30-foot putt for birdie to finish three strokes ahead of Brooks Koepka (KEHP’-kah) in the Open at Pebble Beach. The Kansas native shot a 2-under 69 on Sunday for a 13 under total. Koepka was within one shot of the lead with five holes remaining before closing with pars the rest of the way. (AP) Martin Maldonado celebrated Father’s Day by wearing a blue necktie on his chest protector and had three hits to lift the Kansas City Royals over the Minnesota Twins 8-6 on Sunday. Maldonado had several names scribbled on the tie, along with “Happy Father’s Day.” Pittsburgh Pirates backstop Elias Diaz wore the same tie in a game against Atlanta, which appeared to be provided by equipment manufacturer All-Star. From K-State Abdul Beecham, a starter the last three seasons along the Kansas State offensive line, has signed a rookie free agent contract with the Kansas City Chiefs. Beecham’s signing marks the fourth Wildcat to enter the NFL following the 2018 season. Fellow offensive lineman Dalton Risner was selected in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft by Denver, while Duke Shelley was drafted by Chicago and Alex Barnes signed with Tennessee.
