With tails wagging, numerous loving animals got adopted on Saturday. Manhattan residents flocked to the T. Russell Reitz Animal Shelter, to participate in the national Clear the Shelters event,  the first year that Manhattan has participated since the event started five years ago. The event was a major success, with the shelter adopting out 46 cats, 14 dogs and one rabbit before the event wrapped up. Animals of all ages, breeds and gender were being playful, many of them happy to see so many potential suitors for forever homes. PetPoolooza kicked off on Sunday for it’s 13th year in Manhattan, and several pet owners and their dog buddies turned out to go for a swim at City Park pool. PetPoolooza is a very well attended event, one of the benefits is getting both owners and their dogs some good quality swim time and exercise. It’s also the last day the pool is in service before closing for the fall. With the smell of grilled hot dogs and hamburgers floating through the air, the National Night Out event kicked off in Manhattan Tuesday evening. Held at the National Guard Armory, the event is designed to help people in the community who don’t feel comfortable around law enforcement, interact and shed some light on how police operate. The Riley County Police Department, Riley County EMS, Kansas Highway Patrol, and Kansas State University Police were on hand, displaying their vehicles including RCPD’s new Bearcat armored vehicle. This year’s Little Apple Paddle Festival kicked off without a hitch, but it wasn’t quite the record breaker people had hoped for.   The goal Saturday was to break the world record for longest parade paddle, a record held by Poland since Sept. 1, 2018 with 329 vessels. A total of 339 people signed up for this year’s event put on by the Manhattan Parks and Recreation Department, but fell short by just 12 participants. A vehicle fire occurred in the Riverchase Mobile Home Park. Saturday night a vehicle fire was discovered in the Riverchase Mobile Home park at around 9 PM. Police arrived on scene shortly after reported, and the Riley County Fire District arrived on scene within 15 minutes. The fire was extinguished quickly. No cause has yet been discovered, although it is believed to have been caused by a fault in the electrical system. Further details are pending from RCPD. No other property was damaged as a result of the fire, and the owner of the vehicle is currently unknown.
