OGDEN — An early morning structure fire in Ogden has claimed the life of four people.

Crews from the Ogden, Riley County and Manhattan Fire Departments were dispatched to 208 Riley Ave around shortly after 3:30 a.m. Thursday. A two-story structure was found with heavy smoke showing.

When crews arrived they removed one individual from the building and later located three other individuals. All four were pronounced dead at the scene. Names of the victims have not been released.

Riley County Fire Chief Pat Collins says while emergency crews were on scene, two Riley County firefighters and one EMS official sustained injuries from falls after water being used to extinguish the fire turned to ice. Those three officials were treated at an area hospital. The paramedic is reported to have suffered smoke damage.

The owner of the building is listed as Roger Harris. The building is said to have been a former business that was renovated into a living space. The cause of the fire is being investigated by the Riley County Fire Department, Riley County Police Department, Kansas State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Manhattan Fire Department. Collins says the fire started near a couch in the dwelling, but couldn’t say what caused it to catch.

The 200 block of Riley Ave. remains shut down due to a number of firetrucks in the vicinity.
