WICHITA, Kan. — The city of Wichita is considering banning plastic bags or implementing a city-wide tax to curb their use. The Wichita Eagle reports that the City Council voted for a new task force to consider reducing or eliminating single-use plastic bags. Either option would make Wichita the first city in Kansas to pass a plastic bag ordinance. Other cities in the U.S. have banned plastic bags or imposed taxes on them. The task force is scheduled to meet this month to discuss what such a move could end up costing businesses and the city to implement.

More than 100 special needs individuals, aged 14 and older were treated to prom night Friday at University Christian Church. The annual Night to Shine is sponsored by the Tim Tebow foundation. Churches all over the world hold this event which is in it’s sixth year of existence. This was the first year the event was held in Manhattan. Attendees received limo rides, walked the red carpet and were cheered on by volunteers, K-State cheerleaders, and K-State athletes. UCC lead minister Barry Park was impressed by the turnout. The Riley County Police Department responded to a report of shots fired early Saturday morning. At approximately 2:30 a.m., the RCPD Emergency Communications Center received multiple 911 calls reporting shots fired near Aggieville. Officers responded to the 1100 block of Laramie Street and found an unoccupied vehicle with damage from a bullet. The suspect is unknown. The RCPD is asking anyone with information, to contact RCPD at (785) 537-2112 or Crime Stoppers at (785) 539-7777.

Manhattan-Ogden USD 383 officals  held a groundbreaking ceremony for Oliver Brown Elementary School earlier today, signaling the beginning of construction on the new building. The  facility will be the first school in Kansas named after Oliver Brown, the plaintiff in the Supreme Court case (Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka) that paved the way for racial integration in public schools. Update 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 6 TOPEKA, — Authorities say a man who was shot by a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper during an arrest attempt has died of his injuries. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation said Thursday in a news release that 33-year-old Gaston Nava-Saucedo, of Topeka, died Wednesday. The KBI said previously that the shooting happened Wednesday after the driver briefly exited his car during a traffic stop before getting back in his vehicle to flee.
