WICHITA, Kan. (AP) Residents of an apartment complex that was the scene of a 32-hour standoff are assessing the damage to their homes.
A 24-year-old man barricaded himself into the complex after firing shots Wednesday in a Kmart during a robbery. The man was found dead in an apartment around 10:30 p.m. Thursday. Police are not saying how he died.
Law enforcement escorted some residents into their apartments Friday to retrieve belongings. But The Wichita Eagle reports that people whose apartments were closer to the standoff were told they’d have to wait.
Police told Alyssa Cooper that tear gas and water had damaged her possessions. When she returned to retrieve formula and clothes for her infant son and 2-year-old daughter, police told her she won’t be allowed back in until Monday.
