Wamego’s Quest to Repeat Falls Short


The magical run for the Wamego High School Girls Basketball team the last two seasons came to a heartbreaking end Saturday at the Bicentennial Center in Salina as the Lady Raiders fell to Bishop Miege 57-41 in the Class 4A Division I Championship Game.

Wamego saw their 39-game winning streak which began in the middle of the 2012-13 season come to a halt while Bishop Miege which won numerous State Championships as a Class 5A power over the years takes home the top prize to cap off their first year in Class 4A while making their 22nd appearance overall in a title game.

In the Class 2A State Tournament at Bramlage Coliseum, Central Plains of Claflin completed a perfect season by holding off Jefferson North 47-45 in the Girls title game while in the Boys Championship game it was St. John Hudson finishing undefeated by knocking off Plainville 71-58. In the Girls third place game, Washington County edged Meade 61-58 while in the Boys third place contest it was Olpe beating Pittsburg Colgan 61-39.

In the Class 3A Girls third place game Council Grove fell to Nemaha Valley 43-34 and earlier Saturday in the Class 6A third place game Manhattan High lost to Olathe South 56-53. Maize which beat Manhattan in Friday’s semifinal lost in the title game to Wichita South 47-35.
