Manhattan’s cellphone ordinance has been in effect for over eight months now and Riley County Police officials reported some updated numbers to the Riley County Law Board Monday.
RCPD Captain Tim Hegarty said 180 drivers have been pulled over for texting while driving, with nearly 14-hundred either cited or warned about talking on a cell phone. As for the cell phone ban’s effectiveness in reducing incidents of accidents caused by inattentive driving, RCPD Director Brad Schoen told the Law Board they hadn’t seen any numbers that would suggest there has been an impact one way or another.
Manhattan’s cell phone ordinance goes further than the state’s, which only bans texting while driving. The city ban also covers talking while driving, unless it is configured for hands free usage.
