Senior Jon Davis pounded out three hits including a two-run home run as K-State scored three runs in the seventh inning to complete a comeback from a three-run deficit to beat George Mason 7-6 in the finale of the Homewood Suites Tournament presented by Charleston Crab House on Sunday morning in Charleston, SC. The Patriots posted four runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 6-3 lead over the Cats after the teams exchanged runs during the first three innings.
Blair DeBord connected on a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning to pull K-State within 6-4 of Mason. Ross Kivett led off the Wildcat seventh with a walk, and Davis then dug in from the left side of the plate. On the second pitch from Patriot reliever Neight Hoffa (0-1), Davis uncorked an opposite-field two-run smash to the left field corner to tie the game at 6. After a pair of fly outs, K-State started a two-out rally when DeBord was hit by a pitch and stole second base. Austin Fisher then worked the count, and sliced a single to center field to give the Cats a 7-6 lead.
Starting pitcher Matt Wivinis struggled to open up the game, lasting just four innings, giving up five earned runs on eight hits. Once K-State went to the bullpen, George Mason was held at bay. A pair of freshmen got the Cats thru the middle innings as Hayden Nixon did gave up four hits and a walk in 1 2/3 innings, but struck out two as he held the Patriots scoreless. Jake Matthys (1-0) earned the win by finishing the sixth inning, and pitching 2 1/3 innings of two-hit ball with three strikeouts. Tanner Witt struck out the side in the 9th for his first save.
