Kansas State University is notifying 19 individuals who submitted applications for graduate programs in agronomy between 2010 and 2013 that some of their personal information may have been inadvertently exposed on the Internet. University information security staff was made aware of the issue on Aug. 22 and all files were immediately removed.
The data exposure was the result of an internal migration and not due to any hacking activity. While there is no indication that any personal information has been misused, the university is notifying the individuals affected to provide information on the steps they can take to protect themselves and provide free credit monitoring services for one year.
Another 56 applicants provided some data that may have been exposed, but this information did not include personal information that is typically used for credit fraud. In addition to supporting the affected persons, the university continues its commitment to continual evaluation of all network and server controls to ensure personal information is protected.
