Riley County commissioners approved a grant application for the Riley County Police Department Thursday morning.

The Edward Bryne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant is an annual federal grant the RCPD typically applies for and is designed for local law enforcement.

RCPD director Brad Schoen told commissioners the grant used to provide the department with at least $40,000 in extra funding but has gradually dropped.

Last year the grant allocated $17,000 to the RCPD, although Schoen said this year could be slightly more.

“In terms of dollars, the allocations have been going down since about 2008,” he said. “This year is closer to $19,000 — it’s $18,849.”

Schoen said the money will go to purchasing equipment for court security officers.
