Kansas State homecoming week begins Sunday

By KMAN Staff on October 12, 2020 K-State Activity, Local News

Kansas State homecoming week is right around the corner.

The Wildcat homecoming week kicks off on Sunday. Jessica Elmore, the Associate Director of Diversity Programs for the K-State Alumni Association, says there are several great events happening all week. She mentions one big event happening on Wednesday.

“We have the Family Game Night Homecoming Trivia. So this is a virtual way to test your homecoming knowledge, and there’s going to be some really great prizes. One of those prices is a chance to win a Coach Klieman autographed football,” says Elmore.

This event matches the theme for this year, which is Family Game Night. Elmore says it has been a difficult year to plan, but she talks about how important it is to still have homecoming, even with a pandemic.

“We looked at, what is the experience that we want, and we really want people to still come together as a community. I mean that’s what homecoming is about. It’s about reminiscing on your time if your an alum, with your alma-matter, it’s for current students to get that fight so that we can get ready to win and beat KU on Saturday,” she says.

While the events are great, what goes on behind the scenes during homecoming week is even greater.

Elmore tells KMAN that each year a student homecoming committee agrees upon one local organization to be the beneficiary of the proceeds raised during homecoming week. Elmore talks about this years organization, “No Stone Unturned”.

“That organization is a therapeutic learning center in Manhattan. It’s a team of pediatric specialists including, speech language pathologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, and applied behavioral therapists who provide collaborative care that meets the unique needs of each individual child,” says Elmore.

Elmore says it is important to help out these local organizations, especially during a tough year with the pandemic.

“When you think about what’s happening within the pandemic, you know, fundraisers and things like that have been cancelled. People still need that funding to be able to provide those services that our community needs so desperately, so we are excited to be able to contribute,” she says.
