Sen. Bob Dole became just the second Kansan to lie in state at the U.S. Capitol Thursday, the other being former President Dwight Eisenhower in 1969.
On Thursday, Sen. Jerry Moran spoke with KMAN about the life and legacy of the Russell native, who died Sunday at the age of 98.

While Moran acknowledges Sen. Dole’s shoes are difficult to fill and won’t be filled, he says he continues try to replicate Dole’s love for Kansans and knowing them. Moran says even in a divided country in the age of social media, he hopes Dole’s example of leading with civility can resonate with others.

Speaking at a wreath laying ceremony at the World War II Memorial Wednesday, Sen. Roger Marshall spoke about Dole reminding folks to remember where they’re from.

A memorial service is planned for 11 a.m Friday at Washington National Cathedral followed by a tribute ceremony at the World War II Memorial. Sen. Dole will make his final trip home to Kansas Friday evening.
On Saturday, a public viewing will be held at St. Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Russell from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. with remarks from Sen. Moran, Sen. Roger Marshall and former Senator Pat Roberts at 11 a.m.
A 4 p.m. service is also planned at the State Capitol in Topeka with Gov. Laura Kelly and others.

In accordance with Executive Order 20-30, and in coordination with an amended proclamation signed by President Joe Biden, Gov. Laura Kelly on Thursday amended the order directing flags throughout the State of Kansas to be flown at half-staff in honor of the passing of Senator Dole. Flags shall now be flown at half-staff through midnight on Dec. 11.
