The Pottawatomie County Commissioners Monday lent their support to Road Runner Properties LLC for a Kansas Moderate Income Housing (MIH) Grant and a Housing Investor Tax Credit (HITC).
Road Runner Properties LLC owns North Ridge Apartments in Wamego and is hoping to add 24 more units. The existing 108 units are consistently full.
“The problem is the cost of building new units is double what it was 10 years ago,” explained developer Rob Eichman. “So the rent would go up so high it would be impossible to rent them without (a grant). A lot of widows will move in, then they sell their house in Wamego, that a young couple can afford to buy. That’s how you can get attainable housing. Build stuff for older people and they will sell their house.”
