Three Royals make All-Star squad, Perez to start

For the second consecutive year three members of the Kansas City Royals will be part of the American League All-Star team. Alex Gordon, Greg Holland and Salvador Perez who were part of the AL’s 3-0 victory last summer at Citi Field in New York will be in uniform for the Midsummer Classic July 15 in Minneapolis. As an added bonus, Perez was named the starting catcher for the American League by Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell who is skippering the junior circuit.

Perez who was behind the plate last year when Mariano Rivera threw his final All-Star Game pitch and when Joe Nathan closed out the victory becomes the first Kansas City player to start since Jermaine Dye started in right field at the 2000 All-Star Game in Atlanta. Baltimore’s Matt Wieters was the leading vote-getter at catcher but is unable to participate due to a season-ending injury.
