School District to Update TV Channel

Stacy HarrisOver the past several years, different pieces of equipment have been put together to keep the Manhattan Ogden USD 383 Cox Cable Channel 20 going.  But now, many of those pieces of equipment have started to fail.

During Wednesday evening’s school board meeting, Director of Communications and School Safety, Michele Jones presented a request to update the current TV equipment.

According to Jones, the channel is over 15 years old and some of the original equipment is still in place.  The channel is free from Cox Communications.

Currently, the equipment only allows the district to display Powerpoint and the board meetings.  With the new equipment from Cytek Media of Topeka, the channel could display artwork, photos, and student videos.  It would also allow the board to put school board meeting videos on YouTube.

This item was approved unanimously by the board.

Several financial related items were on the agenda.

Director of Business Services, Lew Faust and Michelle Crow, with Varney and Associates, presented the 2013-2014 financial audit report.

The board also discussed the local option budget (LOB) authority for the coming years.  Although budget time is still nine months away, the board discussed the possibility of talking to the legislators earlier this year so the representatives could be aware of the board’s concerns.

While some board members think the idea of increasing the LOB are inevitable, others said they did not think the board was ready for this move yet.

During the special recognition portion of the meeting, the board recognized Teacher at Anthony Middle School, Stacy Harris.  Harris is the recipient of the Wendell G. Mohling Scholarship Award for 2014-2015.  She received a $500 check to use for a conference in Chicago, and a plaque.
