The presence of bison at the Konza Prairie Bilogical Station may seem iconic, a tribute to America’s past when herds roamed the range

Tall grass Prairie director  John Briggs says that the bison at Konza site serve another important purpose by furthering efforts of numerous experiments at the site.

Those experiments range from seeing how the bison impact tallgrass prairie versus animals from South Africa, like elephants, and the grazing patterns of large animal groups on the Konza.

Briggs says they’re not cattle, and therefore folks who work in the area are under strict protocol when working with the bison for safety.

Any researcher or worker in the area are required to carry a radio, and so far there haven’t been any bison attacks on their home on the range.

To find out more about the bison,  you can visit www.konza.ksu.edu/keep/sci_adventures/bison/2_konza_bison.htm .
