With the recent decision of Kenny Titus to run for the State Senate, a Wabaunsee County native announced his intentions to run for the open seat. Eli Kormanik announced his candidacy on Wednesday to run in the 51st district legislative seat which encompasses East Manhattan to Wamego and rural Pottawatomie County. AAA is estimating that 43.8 million people will be traveling over Memorial Day Weekend, which is the second highest total ever estimated by the company and a record 38.4 million people will be taking to the roads. In their estimate, more than 488,000 Kansans are estimated to travel 50 or more miles this weekend with over 423,000 Kansans traveling by road. AAA’s Shawn Steward says low gas prices play a role in this. Steward reminds travelers to slow down and be careful particularly in high traffic situations or where orange cones may be out. After coming up just 420 votes short in 2022 of unseating incumbent State representative Mike Dodson, Kim Zito announced her candidacy for a rematch this November in the 67th legislative district. The Riley County Law Board approved a motion on Monday to publish a budget that will be officially voted on at their meeting next month. After initially presenting last month a budget of $28.9 million, with an increase of 6.6%, RCPD presented other options Monday, showing reduced asks, totaling between 5 and 6 percent. The Law Board ultimately selected option 2, totaling a 5.88% increase, amounting to $28.5 million. The total dollar amount increase is approximately $1.8 million. Manhattan area lawmakers took part in a legislative forum, hosted Thursday by the Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce. Medicaid expansion failed again and each of the Manhattan delegation shared their thought on the topic, which has long been pushed by Gov. Laura Kelly. Kansas remains just one of nine states to not have expanded Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act. State Rep. The Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce held its monthly military relations luncheon on Friday with its featured speaker being retired Sergeant Major of the Army Michael Tony Grinston who was recently appointed the CEO of Army Emergency Reserve. Grinston served 36 years in the Army before retiring last November. He has ties to the Flint Hills, being stationed on Fort Riley from 2013 to 2015 being apart of the Big Red One Soldiers.
