Today is Primary Election Day as Kansans will held to the polls to nominate candidates for their party in the Nov. 5 election. The community event Everybody Counts returned for its 10th year on Saturday at the Douglass Recreation Center in Manhattan. The event provides community resources for families and children who may not have access to different resources in the community. Event organizer Deb Nuss said this was the largest turnout from organizations that she could remember in the event’s history. “We’ve had about 70 organizations this year,” she said. “That’s a record for us as we typically get around 60.” The event featured haircuts for the second straight year, a clothing drive and several resources in the community center, recreation center…
A Colorado woman was sent to the hospital on Sunday after an accident near Highway 24 in Leonardville. Riley County Police responded to the accident around 4 p.m. to find a two-vehicle accident. Officers reported that a 2016 Dodge Caravan driven by 62-year-old Deanna Currey (Curry) of Riley rounded a corner and was unable to stop before striking the rear of a 2023 Audi driven by 70-year-old Deborah Dugan of Castle Rock, Colorado. Dugan was transported to Via Christi via EMS for non-life threatening injuries. Currey was issued a citation for following too close.
The Kansas Department of Revenue announced on Monday that voting for the next Kansas personalized license plate has opened. To vote on the personalized plates, Kansans can visit ksplates.kansas.gov to select their favorite design. Voting will go until Friday at 5 p.m. with the winning design being announced on Monday Aug. 12. The voting on the personalized plates is different from the standard license plate designs that Kansans voted on last December. To streamline the process, the Department of Revenue incorporated feedback it received from last year’s voting to inform aspects of these designs, including Kansas outline, wheat and sunflowers.…
Kaleb James and Angel Roeser are vying to represent the Republican Party in District 67, the seat left vacant after Rep. Mike Dodson announced he wouldn’t seek another term. District 67 generally covers western Manhattan as well as some areas to the north and south. It’s been nearly two months since the announcement by Caterpillar that they will be closing down their facility in Wamego. The announcement has brought a major shock to the region and Pottawatomie County as it is one of the biggest job producers in the region. A longtime mayor and local of Pottawatomie County is looking to make his way onto the expanded Pottawatomie County Commission. Terry Force, the longtime mayor of Wheaton, is running in the newly created 5th district on the Pottawatomie County Commission, which encompasses the northern portion of the county. Force has also been in the surveyor business for over 30 years and focuses on his extensive knowledge of the county. Chick-fil-A will be closing down for at least 2 weeks beginning this Saturday for remodeling. The store located at 636 Tuttle Creek Blvd just next to Walmart announced on its Facebook on Thursday that the restaurant’s final day of service would be on Friday with drive-thru only service with the remodeling beginning the following day. The store said that they hope to be back open during the week of Aug. 20.
