Registration for the new school year will be starting back up for USD 383 in the coming weeks. Online registration will begin on Monday July 17th for all Manhattan-Ogden Schools. In-person central registration is on Thursday July 27th and on Friday July 28th at Manhattan High School. USD 383 Board of Education Vice President Jayme Morris-Hardeman encouraged parents to sign up online but said if parents need additional information when signing up their kids, they should attend the in-person registration. The town of Randolph, Kansas hosted its annual July 4th celebration this weekend, hosting a slew of events that started on Saturday. One of their main events was on Saturday morning where they held their 23rd annual Car show that saw over 100 cars in attendance ranging from the 1930s to the 2020s. Duane Scardina one of the organizers of the event said that while the thunderstorms in the forecast kept some folks away, it was still a great turnout. A Riley County man was sentenced in Riley County District Court following a probation violation on Wednesday. Tony Henderson Jr. had previously been placed on probation for unlawfully possessing a firearm back in 2016. He entered probation back in December 2021 and it was expected to end this month. Henderson’s probation was nearly completed on a 2016 charge of criminal possession of a firearm. Riley County attorney Barry Wilkerson told the court that based on Henderson’s lengthy record of committing violent crimes which dated back to his days as a minor, that he should be in the Kansas Department of…
With their 90th birthday around the corner, Sunset Zoo is offering a number of exciting activities and events this summer. Marketing and Development Officer Melissa Kirkwood says, the Friends of the Sunset Zoo members (FOSZ) are invited to a summer member breakfast on July 8. The event will last from 10 am to noon, with food prepared by sponsoring partner, The Friendship House. Kirkwood says a kids free day is also planned for July 22. With the weather getting warmer, boating season is back in full swing in Kansas this summer. Riley County Game Warden Ben Jedclika says that while this is a fun time of year to get out on the lake, that it is common for people to forget to follow the safety rules. A former Riley County paraeducator entered a plea agreement Monday in Riley County District Court. Aaron Zachry, 33, pled guilty to single counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child and sexual exploitation of a child. As part of his plea agreement, prosecutors agreed to drop 35 remaining counts listed in the amended criminal complaint. The offenses reportedly occurred in June 2020 and March 2021. Zachry was arrested in June 2021 at the Northview Pool. He also has similar charges out of Geary County, which are expected to be dropped as part of the plea agreement. Zachry is also required…
As the weather gets warmer, construction projects are gaining steam across the city of Manhattan this month. Currently on Fremont Street, a new bus stop is under construction near City Park. The project is expected to cost $2.8 million. Manhattan city manager Ron Fehr says the project is significant and says a new additional waterline was recently installed. Construction is also ongoing at the intersection of Juliette Avenue and the 600 block of Poyntz Avenue. Fort Riley reopened the U.S. Cavalry Museum Tuesday after nearly seven years of planning and reconstruction of the famous building, first constructed in 1855 as a hospital. The project was funded by the U.S. Army and the Center for Military History. In recent years, the Army has pushed to renovate its 43 museums both across the U.S. and overseas. On Monday, AT&T began work on utility relocation as part of the intersection improvements project at Levee Drive and U.S. 24/East Poyntz Avenue. The construction is expected to last two weeks which will cause Levee to be closed from Kretschmer Drive to U.S. 24. Levee Drive will remain accessible however for local traffic east of Kretschmer. Drivers should expect light to moderate traffic while construction takes place. Monday also saw the closing of a lane on Hayes Drive just north of McCall Road. The K-State Alumni Association Board of Directors has announced the hiring of Adam Walker as president and CEO. Walker, a two-time graduate of K-State, will serve in the cabinet of university President Richard Linton, succeeding longtime former president and CEO Amy Button Renz, who is retiring June 30. Walker currently serves in the athletic department at the University of Memphis, where he is executive associate athletic director. Prior to that, he worked as the senior director of development for the Fogleman College of Business and Economics at Memphis. Walker is expected to begin his duties on Monday, July 24th. He…
