For the first time in well over two years, Wamego High School is taking local veterans to Washington, D.C. as part of the Kansas Honor Flight program. The 2-day whirlwind trip allows veterans and their student guardians to visit some of the monuments and memorials and in some cases meet with dignitaries. The flight was scheduled to leave Wednesday morning and return late Thursday night. The homecoming will take place along Lincoln Street between 4th and 6th Streets at approximately 11 p.m. Thursday night. The public is invited to take part in welcoming back the veterans. Authorities say a Wamego man was killed early Sunday in a rollover accident on Military Trail Road near Bluebird Road, west of Wamego. According to Pottawatomie County Sheriff Shane Jager, an investigation into the crash determined 34-year-old Joshua Higdon was traveling eastbound in his truck at a high rate of speed, when he lost control and the truck rolled. Higdon, the lone occupant, was ejected and pronounced dead on scene by Pottawatomie County EMS. Authorities from the Wamego Police Department and Louisville Fire Department assisted on scene. The Manhattan Fire Department was called out to an apartment fire in Manhattan Monday afternoon in the 1300 block of Marlatt Ave. Upon arrival, crews found a two-story, eight unit apartment building with fire on the first floor. The fire was extinguished within five minutes. Residents were not home at the time and no injuries were reported. The two residents occupying the apartment were displaced as a result. Loss is estimated at $40,000 including damage to the structure and contents. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The owner of the property is listed as Country Meadows Residences, L.C.
Two Manhattan men reportedly forced entry and battered two victims at the Manhattan east Dairy Queen Friday night. According to the Riley County Police Department, 37-year-old Cornelius Lee Sisson and 38-year-old Kenneth Dotson were charged after a male and female victim reported the two men forced entry into the store, shortly before 8 p.m. while holding a “club,” then chased the male victim outside, battering both. Sisson was jailed on two counts of battery, aggravated assault, criminal damage to property, aggravated burglary and criminal threat. Bond was set at $30,000. Members of the public got the chance to see the impressive new Junction City High School Saturday. Geary County Schools USD 475 hosted a ribbon cutting and dedication ceremony for the 437,000 square foot facility. Principal Merrier Jackson says it’s the largest public school building in the state of Kansas, and by her estimation, the third largest school building in the nation. Superintendent Dr. Reginald Eggleston expects the school will have a tremendous impact on the school district’s relationship with Fort Riley and the First Infantry Division’s ability to bring soldiers to the region. Pottawatomie County commissioners have approved a final plat for the Flint Hills Christian School property for its expansion project. Planning and Zoning Administrator Gregg Webster presented Monday the 12.7 acre tract where the new addition will be constructed. The plat identifies utility easements already in place, as well as dedication of new utility easements along Green Valley and Elk Creek Road, in addition to right-of-way dedications. Firefighters made quick work of a house fire Thursday morning in west Manhattan. Crews from the Manhattan Fire Department were dispatched to 3208 Highland Circle shortly before 11 a.m. for a report of smoke. When crews arrived they found fire in the basement of a single-story home. The home was not occupied at the time of the fire however a pet turtle inside the home died as a result of the fire. The total loss was estimated at around $30,000 including damage to the structure and contents. The fire department says the resident was able to remain in the home.…

Fog is blamed for an early morning crash that injured two people in north Riley County Thursday. The Kansas Highway Patrol says two pickups collided at the intersection of Sherman Road and US Hwy 77 shortly after 7 a.m. A westbound truck driven by 63-year-old Patrick Johnson of Manhattan failed to stop at a stop sign to poor visibility and struck a northbound truck, driven by 50-year-old Daniel Reves of Westmoreland.
