After nearly four hours of trying to negotiate with an armed suspect north of Westmoreland, authorities were able to safely apprehend him without any incident Friday night. The man, who’s name has not been released, was reportedly threatening to harm himself and refused to leave his vehicle, which was parked north of the town in a park area just off of Highway 99, according to Pottawatomie County Sheriff Greg Riat. The man reportedly had a gun, creating an “unstable” situation. As a result the highway was closed for a short time north of Westmoreland to Hwy 16. The Riley County…

Kansas State University Police are investigating a hit and run crash on campus this week that left one person injured. The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of College Ave. and Kimball. K-State Police say a black GM SUV with traverse body style struck a 19-year-old woman on a bicycle. She sustained an arm injury. There is currently no driver description or tag information. No tickets or arrests have been made. Anyone with information should call K-State Police.

Manhattan Regional Airport held a celebratory cake cutting ceremony Friday morning to commemorate 10 years of jet service with American Airlines. The event kicked off a 10 month campaign and contest, put on by the Manhattan Convention & Visitors Bureau which includes giveaways to passengers who fly in and out of the airport. Airport Director Jesse Romo shared details during Friday’s ceremony. Over the past decade, the airport has grown, increasing the number of passengers who boarded flights or flew into MHK from 10,000 early on to over 70,000 in 2018. A local developer wants to move forward on a proposed $50 million six-story project that would include 315 apartments, 125 hotel rooms and a 378-stall parking garage. The site for the project would be built on the current Anderson Village shopping center site, located across from Kansas State University and directly west of Manhattan Christian College. Earlier this month, developer Chris Elsey presented the lucrative idea at a neighborhood meeting where concerns were raised, primarily over parking concerns. No arrests have been made after Riley County Police were alerted Wednesday to a Snapchat post depicting two Manhattan High West Campus students holding what appeared to be a gun and making threatening statements. A preliminary investigation indicates the video posted by a 15-year-old male and 15-year-old female, was directed at two other Manhattan High students, a separate 15-year-old male and a 17-year-old male. A week into the new school year, transportation concerns have been aplenty for parents of students in Manhattan/Ogden Schools. Road construction has caused significant challenges for some getting to and from school. Most recently for students at Marlatt Elementary, a temporary crosswalk had to be installed at Kimball Ave. and Kenmar, due to the closure at the Browning Ave. intersection. The airport is celebrating 10 years of American Airlines regional jet service with a cake cutting ceremony, conveniently set for 10 a.m. Friday in the terminal lobby. It’s also launching a 10-month-long campaign and contest for prizes. The public is welcome to attend. Two survivors of clergy sex abuse were in Manhattan Tuesday calling on more transparency from the Salina Diocese when it comes to allegations of clergy sex abuse. Holding signs for the bishop to “come clean” outside of Seven Dolors Catholic Parish in Manhattan, David Clohessy and Larry Davis represent the support group SNAP (which stands for Surviors Network of those Abused by Priests). A Riley County District Court Judge has continued a status hearing for a Manhattan man accused of sex crimes involving three underage victims. Robert Iacobellis appeared via video conference Tuesday from his jail cell without an attorney present. He informed Judge William Malcolm he’d been attempting to have his attorney of the past 18 years, Richard Seaton represent him in this case. That has fallen through to this point as he told the judge he had not heard back from Seaton after making initial contact earlier this month following his Aug. 2 arrest. A protest is planned Tuesday afternoon outside the Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Manhattan which will include clergy sex abuse victims and their supporters. The group called SNAP (Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests) say they’ll protest Salina Bishop Gerald Vincke’s refusal to release a full list of child molesting clerics. In March, Vincke posted a list of 14 credibly accused clerics who are or were in his diocese. The SNAP group says three credibly accused clerics were left off that list including Fr.
