A Junction City woman will spend the next five years in federal prison for possessing child pornography. U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister said Thursday that 24-year-old Kayla Michelle Simpson pleaded guilty to one count of possessing child pornography. Simpson’s iPhone was seized by FBI officials in September 2016. In her plea, Simpson admitted her phone contained images of her having sex with an underage girl. The case was prosecuted by the Justice Department’s Project Safe Childhood Initiative.

Five people were involved in a motor vehicle accident south of Manhattan Wednesday. According to the Riley County Police Department, just before 7 p.m. a vehicle was leaving the area near Pillsbury Crossing on Deep Creek Road when it left the roadway. As a result, two of the five passengers became trapped inside the vehicle. Police say thanks to an observant driver, emergency help was able to arrive quickly and rescue those passengers who were then transported to the hospital for treatment. TOPEKA, Kan. — As Country Stampede gears up for its 2019 event this weekend, the Topeka venue hosting it has planned a “major announcement” Thursday morning regarding the music festival. MANHATTAN — Riley County Police are investigating after a domestic incident led to an arrest for attempted murder. Officers responded shortly after 6:30 a.m. Tuesday to a residential address in the Crestwood Apartments of Stagg Hill in southwest Manhattan, for a report of a past domestic altercation. A 38-year-old woman reported she was physically assaulted by her boyfriend. An investigation led to the arrest of 39-year-old Shawn Henderson of Manhattan. MANHATTAN — Riley County Police have released more information regarding Monday’s crash at Tuttle Creek Blvd and Allen Road that sent three people to the hospital. Police say the accident happened when a Ford Taurus driven by 83-year-old Patricia Duggan of Manhattan crashed into a Toyota Camry driven by 26-year-old Hang Huynh of Manhattan, at around 11 a.m. Monday. Duggan was transported to Via Christi for treatment of her injuries, then transferred to a Topeka hospital. Huynh was Life Flighted to Topeka for treatment of her injuries. MANHATTAN — A Topeka man was arrested Monday after leading Riley County Police on a brief pursuit onto Kansas Hwy 18, west of Manhattan. Dylan Wayne Masse, 28, faces four total counts including a charge of flee or attempt to elude, reckless driving, possession of stolen property and operating a car without a required device. MANHATTAN — The Riley County Police Department has been approved for its $22.1 million budget for fiscal year 2020. The total amount was a 2.8 percent increase over the 2019 approved budget, offset by over $91,000 in unused funds left over from 2018. MANHATTAN — An electrical issue caused smoke in the basement of a Kansas State University building Monday afternoon. Manhattan Fire Department officials were dispatched around 3:30 p.m. to Trotter Hall, located south of the KSU Veterinary Hospital for the report of a structure fire. When they arrived, they noticed smoke filling the basement and the building was evacuated. As a precaution, electricity to the building was shut off before the building got the all clear. Manhattan Fire PIO Ryan Almes confirms there was no fire with this incident. No injuries were reported.
