Fort Riley will conduct an energy resilience readiness exercise on July 26. Black Start is a mandated power outage designed to test the installation’s emergency response. The exercise will happen between 4 a.m. to 1 p.m. Directorate of Plans, Training, Mobilization and Security Clay Nauman says the exercise provides an opportunity to make sure all the systems are working correctly. RCPD, Manhattan Fire Department and Riley County EMS are taking part in an annual joint active violence training at Amanda Arnold this week, with coordination also provided by USD 383. Manhattan Fire Department Battalion Chief Mark Whitehair says the drills provide an opportunity for departments to practice working together. Riley County emergency responders that participate in the 3-day course get to practice various scenarios with volunteers playing real-life victims. Phase 3 of Manhattan Regional Airport’s Runway Project has been pushed back slightly. Airport Director Brandon Keazer told the Airport Advisory Board on Monday it’s a result of recent weather conditions. The delays are not expected to have an impact on the start date of phase 4 of runway reconstruction. Keazer says most of the taxiway work has been completed. Officials are anticipating to still reopen air service in early September.

Wednesday’s Manhattan-Ogden School Board meeting marked the final meeting for Dr. Marvin Wade, the district’s superintendent for the past seven years. Dr. Wade’s last day with the district is Friday and he’ll be succeeded in that position by Eric Reid, the district assistant superintendent. Wade was on KMAN’s In Focus Wednesday morning ahead of the board meeting and noted he’s looking forward to retirement, but will miss the work he’s done for years. The 2023 class of Mandela Washington Fellows arrived in Manhattan this week. An opening ceremony was held Friday at the Staley School of Leadership. The 25 leaders from sub-Saharan Africa will take part in a 6-week program under K-State’s Institute in Civic Engagement. Program Academic Coordinator Jess Ramirez says the program is an opportunity to collaborate, network and find creative solutions. Associate Director Trish Gott says the program teaches the fellows to build relationships within the cohort to work on solving issues unique to their countries. The new $16.3 million Advanced Technology Center project is on schedule and progressing well, according to Manhattan Area Technical College President Jim Genandt Genandt recently gave KMAN a progress update, saying the project is currently lining up to be completed by next March. He also says contractors and city officials have been supportive of the project. The new facility will replace six modular buildings on the east side of campus and will become home to six technical programs and a BSL3 simulation training lab, in addition to conference room and computer lab space. Manhattan’s Juneteenth celebrations concluded Saturday, following three days of activities. The day began with a proclamation by Mayor Mark Hatesohl followed by the annual Unity Walk. The community walked from Longs Park to Douglass Park, mirroring the 1968 walk by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr,, who delivered his final speech at Kansas State University, shortly before his assassination. Participants were welcomed with brunch, music, activities and vendors. K-State basketball player Ayoka Lee was among the many participants. The Flint Hills Discovery Center hosted the 13th annual Kansas Cowboy Poetry Contest on Friday.    The finals were divided into serious and humorous categories, and poets ranged in age and experience.  Winner of the serious category, Kye Rieff has only competed three times but says Cowboy Poetry contests are a space that he feels comfortable sharing with his kids and family.  Rieff says he’s new to the world of cowboy poetry.
