HUTCHINSON — Kansas election officials are putting the brakes on a dog’s campaign for governor. KWCH-TV reports that Terran Woolley, of Hutchinson, decided to file the paperwork over the weekend for his 3-year-old pooch, Angus, to run for the state’s top office after reading stories about six teenage candidates. The teens entered the race after learning Kansas doesn’t have an age requirement, something lawmakers are seeking to change. Angus is a type of hunting dog called a wire-haired Vizsla. Woolley figured Angus would need to run as a Republican. He described Angus as a “caring, nurturing individual who cares about…

The Wichita Eagle reports that the state has spent more than $3.3 billion meant for highways on other areas of spending over the past 20 years. Jeff Colyer told lawmakers last week that the state “must end the highway funding sweeps and build an effective plan that promotes economic development and strengthens our transportation network.” Colyer didn’t offer a concrete proposal or timeline…

On a simply wild Saturday in the Big 12, it seems only one of the season’s consistent themes made an appearance. Texas Tech plays some serious defense. The 7th-ranked Red Raiders smothered Kansas State’s offense for much of the night Saturday in a 66-47 victory that gave TTU a one-game lead in the league standings. “They’re one of the top defensive teams in the country,” Bruce Weber said. “They guard differently than a lot of teams. We tried some different schemes, but we just missed shots.” K-State shot 28.9 percent, including just 26.3 in the second half. The Wildcats’ first…
For a moment, it appeared new Kansas Gov. Jeff Coyler had cut his trip to the Little Apple short during a frigid Saturday afternoon in Aggieville. The former lieutenant governor to staunch conservative Sam Brownback made his entrance inside a packed Bluestem Bistro after 2 p.m. and wasted no time to engage with citizens in an effort to fortify his well-publicized call for a “change of tone” in Kansas government. But the tone on Saturday from those in the bistro was fixated on Medicaid expansion. Medicaid provides coverage for some low-income people, families and children, pregnant women, the elderly, and…
