SHAWNEE — School administrators across Kansas are trying to figure out how a recent state Supreme Court ruling will affect their ability to provide critical summer programs and prepare for the fall semester that begins in August. Some districts are taking a wait-and-see approach to a stalemate between the Legislature and the court, which threatened last week to cease all school functions on July 1 if lawmakers don’t find a way to resolve shortcomings in the current funding formula. A Westmoreland man, named Alvin Matzke, told KMAN he’s decided to run for Pottawatomie County Commissioner after settling down and retiring from farming. Although Matzke says his intentions were at one point lighthearted, he says he feels like local government officials will need to make up for what is to come after the presidential election coming soon. When asked about his qualifications, he indicated his blue-collar experience has led him to want to drive local change.Matzke told KMAN says one of his biggest platforms is cutting local spending in many areas, explaining that he believes government spending can be greatly reduced.…
Levi Smith is a student at K-State pursuing his graduate degree, and shortly before the election filing deadline of noon Wednesday, he indicated his plans to pursue a position as a Riley County Commissioner. Smith moved here from Greensburg, and says he gained a lot of public service experience “at the most real level,” working on a FEMA community planning board in the wake of the tornado that destroyed the city in 2007. Smith, who got his Bachelor’s at K-State, says he’s sticking around Manhattan as he completes his Master’s degree. Smith says the big issues he’d like to address…
K-State’s full non-conference schedule for men’s basketball has been released. The marquee games are all away from Bramlage Coliseum. The Wildcats will play in the Barclays Center Classic in Brooklyn along with Maryland, Boston College and Richmond, plus road games at Tennessee and St. Louis and netural-site games against Colorado State and Washington State. The home schedule includes Western Illinois, Omaha, Hampton, Robert Morris, Green Bay, Prairie View A&M and Gardner Webb.
Tires on several vehicles in Manhattan’s downtown area were slashed overnight. Riley County Police Acting Public Information Officer Lt. Greg Steere tells KMAN officers are still compiling reports, but a significant amount of vehicles were impacted, with incidents beginning in the 400 block of Poyntz Avenue near the Wareham and Harry’s. The investigation revealed 19 total vehicles were involved, all of which had tires which were punctured by unknown means. At the time of this report officers were still in the process of identifying all of the victims associated with this incident. The total damage to all of the vehicles…
The Wamego Area Chamber of Commerce officially announced Thursday that Daryn Soldan has been named as the new Executive Director effective June 20th. A news release indicates Soldan brings with him a wealth of small business consultation knowledge and prior Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development experience. He joins the Wamego Area Chamber of Commerce from his prior position as a small business consultant with the Kansas Small Business Development Center where he served a six county region partnering with local Chambers of Commerce and Economic Development entities to provide education and consultation with local business owners and prospective entrepreneurs. A Manhattan man was taken to a Topeka hospital following an accident in the 12-hundred block of Zeandale about a mile and a half east of K-177 Wednesday evening. Jeffery Jepsen, 29, was driving a 2007 Nissan 350-Z westbound on Zeandale when for an unknown reason the Nissan crossed the center line, left the roadway and overturned, ejecting the driver. Jepsen was taken to Stormont Vail in Topeka where he is reported to be in critical care. The accident was reported at 7:30 p.m.
Former K-State quarterback Michael Bishop has been nominated for the College Football Hall of Fame. Bishop is one of 75 players and six coaches listed on the Hall of Fame’s 2017 ballot. Players including Peyton Manning, Tony Gonzalez, Eric Crouch, Troy Polamalu, Brian Urlacher, Marshall Faulk, Eric Dickerson, Tim Couch, Matt Leinart and Ray Lewis. The six coaches nominated: Jim Carlen, Pete Cawthon Sr., Danny Ford, Billy Jack Murphy, Darryl Rogers, Steve Spurrier. K-State athletics have announced kickoff times for the first three games of the upcoming K-State football season. Game one on Friday, Sept. 2 at Stanford will kickoff at 8 p.m. local and will be televised on FS1. The home opener on Saturday, Sept. 17 vs. Florida Atlantic will kick at 1:30 on FSN And game three on Saturday, Sept. 24 hosting Missouri State will kick at 6:10 on K-StateHD.TV
